SOOO please I found this thread. I have the exact same issue. Rear off side wheel binding. Is ok for a while and then as soon as you;ve been on the brakes it starts to bind.

The guys at the garage said it was the self adjusting rachet over compensating and locking them on but they had no idea why because it was all mechanical and everything looked fine.

I assume its over tightening on the rachet possibly due to the reasons Bushwacker mentioned, so I'll print this out and take it down to the guys at Toyota.

    Thx guys.

      Just re-reading this again.

The issue I have can lock up the nearside rear wheel when I've been using the foot brake, NOT the hand brake. EG it started to happen in some stop start traffic on the M25

Do surfs brake on all four wheels from the pedal? Sorry for ignorance.

That said, it does usually start to occur after its been parked up with the handbrake on, it's fine, then after you use the pedal it starts to bind and stick on that back nearside wheel. Brake pedal goes stiff when the problem occurs. Its locked up right now on the drive, cant move it.

So if I am reading this right, its likely to be the shoes being worn, the auto adjuster ratchet in the drum is over ratcheting and then the brakes bind?

Any help appreciated. Have a garage having a look on Monday, so any guidance would be much appreciated.

        Hi

Hi, Well being a girl, I'm no expert, but the guys on here are amazing, they will give you lots of advice and their knowledge is amazing.

With mine - I took it in first of all because there seemed to be a lot of travel on the foot pedal for the brake before the brakes worked. It was under warranty. They gave it back to me and I had the biggest scare, the brakes - like you said - the foot pedal went totally rock hard and there was not much movement, it was just solid. With this the brakes has stuck on and were binding. Twice the garage said they'd fixed it, twice it didn't do the trick. Same problem.

Finally, they did whatever they did to it, but it did take three attempts at it going in and out, and a week in total, thank god I wasn't paying for it all. When I got it back they said that the brake pads had gone all smooth and shiny and they had put some new ones on. They also said something about a pipe collapsing, so they had replaced it too. Looking under the nearside back wheel there's some silver thing that appears to have been replaced with a pipe attached. They tore their hair out over it I know but got it done, and it seems to be fine now.

Good luck with it, these are amazing cars, and I love my Surf, would rather drive this than my regular car any day of the week, it's my indulgence and it's a lot of fun. Hope you get it all sorted.
        Love me Love my Surf!
