  • temp gauge/losing water

    hi all,
i'm having a problem which is causing me a bit of a headache, i'm losing water randomly from somewhere, and i can't figure out where, after 3 days of driving to work and back i needed to add around 1.5 litres of water to the rad, this has happened a few times ,but doesn't happen consistently- i check it every day and it'll be fine and then it'll be drained. i took it for a drive up the skifield last weekend which gives the car a bit of a workout and got the temp gauge right up and it didn't lose a drop.
this has roughly coincided with my temp gauge reading 'normally', when i first got the car it took an age to heat up and the temp gauge never really got above low so i assumed thats how surfs were but now it will climb to between a quarter and a half on the gauge.
apart from these things there are no differences in the power, driving or general behaveour of the car.
i plan on changing the thermostat and rad cap this weekend as recommended in other posts, any ideas apart from that?
    any info appreciated.

    by the way its a 1990 2.4td

    regards martin

mine is always just under half.. I think that is normal.. as my previous Surf and Hilux did the same..

Altho when I am higher in the mountains/ Hills the temp drops a bit...

as for the rad loosing water I am not sure checked all ur hoses?

Give the system a flush too when u change the cap and thermostat. and hopefully all shud be well..

    Good luck
One day at the time I guess..

I think when you go to change the stat you will find that it has been removed. This was probably to 'fix' some kind of cooling problem, quite possibly the water loss. Change your rad cap and check the top of the radiator for pin hole leaks that only open up when it's hot.

        Incidentally, what skifield?

Very nice. If you're ever in the area, I recommend the tiny private one near Hanmer Springs. Only two runs and the guy who sells you your pass has to turn the lift on and make you your tea, but it's pretty much empty the whole time so the powder's perfect. And the road up there is a bit of a giggle too.

Anyway....If you've got head problems, especially in the cold, you would normally see a fair bit of white, sweet smelling smoke coming from the exhaust. If the new rad cap and stat don't sort things, take it to a garage and ask them to check the coolant for combustion gases.
