  • Big, big problem!!!

On starting the truck this morning, I usually get a small amount of smoke from exhaust, but today it was clouds and clouds of white smoke, to the point I had to pull of the road as it was dangerous for other road users. I revved it whilst stationary for a couple of minutes, and it cleared, so I set off again. Got about 5/6 miles, and temp. gauge went off the scale, as far past 'H' as it can get, and water pi55ing out from expansion bottle. I pulled over immediately, and switched the engine off. I was parked at the entrance to a disused airfield, on a bit of a blind bend, so after 10 mins I had to risk starting the engine and limping her up the road a bit, but she didn't start The engine sounded like it wanted to turn over, but then just 'knocked' and sounded jammed / seized. I didn't dare try it again.

I've had the AA recover it to home, shoehorned all my tools into my wifes car, and went to work. I'm just after advice as to best course of action really, I should mention I changed all the drive belts recently, and have done all the obvious maintenance, changed rad cap / therm. / coolant and burped system etc, cam belt changed 6000km ago, regular oil and filter changes. I'm worried I didn't tension water pump belt correctly and coolant wasn't circulating properly.

I would really appreciate any advice.

    Many thanks.

Nasty! Sounds like heads gone good and proper and is now locked up (hydraulic'd) I would take head off and check out damage.
When you say you may not have tensioned waterpump belt up- you would have to have it quite slack for it not to work and you would have heard it squealing on acceleration.
Did your charging light come on as this would indicate alternator not turning-same belts.....Just to try and put your mind at rest.
I doubt it was you- just damn unlucky.
    Keep us posted

Thanks for reply, I didn't have any lights on dash to indicate alternator not turning, and no noise, so I think you're right and I've just been unlucky. Truly gutted, as she was running so sweet, but there we are. I've never taken the
head off one of these before, but will give it a go and see how I get on.

      Thanks again for the reply.
