bought a surf 1990 import which was banging like hell, took the engine out to find the flywheel had completely torn away from its crank shaft bolts! replaced the engine(cause the fly wheel crank end was floating out way to much) to find that there is about a 5mm gap between torque converter and the fly wheel of the replaced engine??. can I insert spacers like washers?

Hi Bushwhacker thanks for the advice.I havent taken the transmission of the T/c.I can understand if i have offered the t/c bell housing up wrong and the shaft has not located in the flywheel properly, that that may push the T/c back and cause the gap! But not having taken the transmission of the T/C, i am not familiar with its mechanics and wonder how seating it properly on the shaft will allow it closer to the engine? Does this mean the previous owner has taken it apart and not fitted back properly causing it to tear the fly wheel away and knacked the crank bearing?
