  • Gurgling noise?

My boyfriends 2.4 auto diesel Surf, which he has had for about 3 months makes a gurgling noise, coming from somewhere under the bonnet, it has donethis ever since we had it. It was leaking (ever so slightly) coolant (We'd put about half a litre in each month), so we took it into the garage and they fitted some new clips and said that was the reason for the leak, however it still makes a gurgling noise, could this be an air bubble in the cooling system and it just needs bleeding?
Also when we drive on the motorway the thermostat goes up close to the red but it has never hit it, a mechanic friend said this may be linked to a bubble in the coolant, as the thermostat is registering the bubble and thinking it's hotter than it is (something along those lines anyway)??? I have absolutely no idea, so would really appreciate any advice, thanks.

Not too many liquid cooled aircraft engines out there.
