This was posted by "bushewaker " if that helps ?

Done this to my truck ages ago , better mpg ,power and black smoke.

But as nev said it may be stuck open ? that will be better to take it off and
    blank it off completely.

    Cheers Chris

hi BUSHWHACKER have you actually done this mod if so roughly how long did it take and did you need to remove anything else to access the area you where working on in your opinion will this get rid of the black smoke by all accounts it cant do any harm

          thanks jon

            thanks jon

I just did the cable tie method.
As nev said, it's unburnt fuel that causes blkack smoke, so you need to do ther diagnostics proceedure fist to see if there is a problem with the fueling.

            p.s. I removed my 2.4 diesel.

The part you have marked green is a Fuel Injector Pipe not a hose.

Do not disconnect the hoses completely. Just remove the one marked in red, plug with a ball bearing and replace. This keeps the whole system looking original and prevents dirt and water entry into any open ports for the vacuum lines.

The reason it looks a little different is because of the plastic T piece in the pic with another hose branching off to the right. Ignore the T and this other hose. This is something I set up to connect to a vacuum gauge to test operation of the engine shutdown VSV.

i have already tried the egr ball bearing and tiewrap trick
                    bottle of redex
                    air filter seems fine
fuel filter not long since been replaced and has been running fine
no lose of power and sounds fine however there is another issue that started around the same time related? within the first 10-15mins of running the warning light next to the turbo light comes on and revs seem to increase and fall and the truck somtimes lurches foward

please please help as i have only had this one for two weeks as the big end went on my last truck so im not going to be happy if i have bought a lemon this truck is a 2.4 ssr-g K reg my last truck was a 2.4 ssrx L reg which i still have for any compatible parts apart from big end and dont really wont to use anything major off the engine as i dont trust it

                    thanks guys
Have you done the fault check codes. It could be the ECU temp sender faulty (thats a code 4) I get the same problem, black smoke, especially on take off, erratic idle and check engine warning light.

now the bad news.... if it is the sensor they are tucked away between the statermotor and inlet manifold, it looks an absolute pig to get at (which is why I havent done mine yet!).

It could also be a damaged wire, which would give the same effect, as the ECU gives a fault code if there is no resistance of an infinate one!

No. Just better to use a ball bearing in my opinion. Doing this does not leave anything open to dirt and water entry.

spot on cool error code 4 what next

and nev i have attached 3 pics as im abit confused doesnt seem to take much lately

1st pic is tech drawing of EGR VALVE ?

2nd pic the one from your other post

3rd under my bonnet could you please take a look and let me know also where do i go next with the error code 4 could this be related to the pipe that is disconnected if not what has been disconnected

as its the coolant temp sensor is it worth doing an engine flush first

i have notice some gunk around some of the pipes any ideas

The hose to top of B is the correct EGR hose to block. The other one to block is the one I marked in red. The one you have the number 2 on.

Coolant sensor is in the block above starter and very difficult to see. It may just be a loose or damaged wiring connector so check this first. An engine flush may help if corrosion has built up around the sensor inside the block.

so im blocking 2 hoses in total

should this stop the black smoke or is this being caused by the coolant temp issue what are the risks of leaving the coolant temp sensor for the time being is it a big problem that requires urgent attention

                            thanks all

Doing the EGR won't ever stop black smoke but it will reduce it substantially. In your case, it'll probably have little effect as your engine is overfuelling due to the temp sensor being shot.

You can drive it like that if you like, but it will produce clouds of filth and get through a fair bit of diesel.
