  • Idler Arm broken??

    Hello,i recently bought a 91 Surf SSR-G.
Everything works perfect on the car exept one thing:
As i lifted the car up and had a look at the tyres and the steering i found out that, when rocking the left front tyre, the idler arm seems to be loose in his bearings...now i dont know if its a bearing, but the last joint before the attachment to the chassis seems to be wobbly... [IMG][/IMG] i am concerned since im going on a trip through australia...i attached a photo so u can have a look at it....
should i change the idler arm?? is this phenomen normal??
help would be appreciated..thank u folks

yeah it's pretty normal for the idler arm to need replacing at some point,

if it's play in the shaft there is a bush kit available so you can recondition it, but for the price you may aswell replace it as the ball joints wil be as worn as the bushes anyway. check out http://toyotasurf.asn.au/forum/viewforum.php?f=8 for suppliers in your area

      Hi,

The steering idlers do seem to wear out quite quickly.

Do you have some play in your steering and a bit of a 'squirmy' feeling under acceleration?

If so, it is probably the idler and you should get a new one.

the weard thing is that the steering is ok and there is no play when steering....just when the car is lifted up and you push and pull the wheel...then u can see that the part (the joint)where the red arrow goes to is wobbling and seems loose....

you can replace the bushes for the steering idler as a cheaper option to start with and see if that cures the problem and if not then get a new idler.

the bushes cost £2.50 each plus vat and postage. If you cant get them over there send me an email and i'll sort something for you if you want.
