Now there is a bit more info on the fault in the head. It appears that it is not cracked, but "c'est fondue".
Those with a cheese habit will recognise the word as 'melted'. Now quite what a cylinder head is doing melting is beyond me, considering the engine was still full of coolant and not showing any signs of overheat. The combustion must have softened a particularly vulnerable part of the head. Is the head cast iron or aluminium? I am assuming it is cast iron, being a diesel and that.
