  • Weird Rattle

There is a weird rattle sometimes from somewhere under the bonnet, At first I thought it was a leaf in the vent but now it sounds a bit more like a piece of metal somewhere, I only here it sometimes for a few seconds and then it stops, someone said it could be something in the turbo but the turbo still works. I started the surf yesterday with the bonnet up and I could hear it quite loud for a couple of seconds and then it stopped.
    Any Ideas?

Check to see if the heat sheild on the Turbo has come loose.

Also check the plate in the wheel arch as one of the bolts may of come out causing it to rattle

Theres a metal plate with 4 10mm bolts which can be taken off to get to the oil filter easier

I hit it a belt with my fist and it seems ok.

                  weird rattle

I developed exactly the same rattle in my 89 surf, 2.4LT.
Sometimes it sounds like gravel hitting undercarriage. It lasts a few seconds only and is gone. I was not able to discover the cause of it yet. Did you Irishoffroad get resolved your rattle?

i get a wiered rattle from what sounds deep beneath the bonnet ! it makes me think that the bottom end is Fu#@+D or the gear box !

its the only thing i'm TRULLY worried about !

its there if i lift off the go peddle and let it run under its own steem, especialy with the O.D off! accelerate and it seems ok ! though it could be just the noise from the engine !

                    no idea ! ! ! i want to drive another 2.4 to see really ! ! !

I would recommend a good old oil change as 3-5000 miles is the advised intervals, if your low or old oil then it would cause a tapping or rattle as you start up especially in the morning

Could be dirty injectors, mine went like that after using veg for long period without any diesel, it used to make injectors crack a bit on overrun, put my foot down and it would go away. Some redex and a tank of diesel and back in business

I used to get a rattle on mine when cold and sometimes when the engine was ticking over after a long journey. It turned out to be that pulley on the top left hand side, the one with no groove for the vee belt, carrying on spinning at high revs after the engine revs had dropped. Spookily it used to carry on spinning for anything up to a minute after the engine was stopped.

I have an unidentified "jangle" from underneath mine when I go over bumps. I have been underneath and given everything a shake. I have jacked the truck up with axle stands under the chassis and still can't find anything loose. I have even had the front wheels off incase I have a sticking brake caliper, causing a brake pad to be loose.
                              It's only a hobby!
