  • PLEEEEEEASE HELP with the Gutless Pig !

    Right people,

The truck has spent a day at the garage and they have managed to achieve NOTHING AT ALL!!!!!!!

They adjusted the fuel pump timing in every direction (all of 1/4" !) and this has made no difference at all. Apparently the delivery is electronically controlled and must be done with a laptop - but its got the same ECU as it had when it was quick, so why does it need adjusting ?

The previous engine was strong and could pull the car up to the ton (if needed) with very little hesitation.
The replacement engine has the most awful flat spot at around 40mph and has no guts at all, it seems to drag itself through the gears screaming and kicking. The best speed I've had so far (which took 5 miles to acheive) is 79mph ! First thing in the morning she'll idle nicely, no smoking but if reved there is the slightest lumpy misfire for a moment or two and toddler could outrun it for the first mile or so. (I know diesels are sluggish when cold but this is ridiculous)

The turbo is spinning up, you can hear & feel it. There is no excessive smoke of any colour. Nothing gets over heated, the oil presure is fine. I even tried the EGR mod (This worked on the old angine and has made no difference whatsoever on this one)

What the HELL is wrong with it ? Where do I start without throwing ££££££ at it ? Is there anything I can test, try ?

    Help ?

    Jim

May need the ECU re programming if they had the battery disconected . I have a friend in the business who may be able to test for you . PM me for details if you want

Have You Tried It With Air Intake Hose Removed
AS I HAD SAME TROUBLE ON A PETROL ENGINE, AIR INTAKE WAS BLOCKED

I'll try again seeing as it crashed on me the first time

If it was me I would try:

        - Checking the earthing strap to the engine and make sure they put it back on - will cause all sorts of issues with the sensors if it isn't good
        - Putting all of the sensors from the old engine on the new one
        - Checking the air intake for leaks, blockages, air filter, etc
        - Check that some little gob****e hasn't rammed something up the exhaust
        - Bleed the diesel through the fuel filter
        - Check / change the injectors

        Rich.
If life's an uphill struggle then downhill from now on can't be that bad?!

has the valve clearances been checked, has the timing belt been checked to make sure the timing marks line up, pump timing needs to be done with the pump off the vehicle on specialist machinery, why not try the old pump, does the engine sound quiet when idleing (pump to retarded) or can you hear the diesel knock, and i know you said the other day, are your sure the engine isnt breathing

Have you checked for leaks between the turbo and inlet manifold, especially round the hoses as any cracks/leaks here means all your boost pressure goes straight into the engine bay and not through yer engine!!??

                Errr...me too!!

My 2.4 auto suffers from the same symptoms. To cap it all I paid £55 to have the fuel filter changed and the turbo put through 'diagnostics'. They told me the turbo wasn't charging, no reading at all, and I would need a new one.

I have just walked in from my garage.

                I discovered:
                • The boost gauge was crimped behind the dash. I uncrimped it and there is boost there.
                • I then checked the hoses (again), and found that when viewed from a certain angle a bl**dy great hole can be seen in the flexible coupling!
Milners don't do one, so I have taped it up and will have to try and source one on here.

The turbo is now a muted healthy whine, but the thing has probably been wrecked by having unfiltered air sucked through it.

This will also have messed up the diesel pump, as the turbo sends the signals to the ECU, and the ECU controls the fuel flow.

Next trick is to disconnect the batteries for 3 minutes. This resets the ECU, and may reset the fuel pump signals.

If that doesn't work, I may just drive up to Turbo Technics, or round to Allards and let the experts give it the once over. No more dickhead local 'engineers' for me!!

                Cheers

make sure you're getting full throttle - just because it revs to the limiter isn't enough, make sure there's no more travel at the pump with the accelerator pedal right down (engine off!)

                    Hi Jim

This is what it looks like on my 4Runner. Make sure that with the accelerator pedal pushed right down, the quadrant can't be turned any further clockwise.
Had this with a 38tonne tractor unit, and adjusting it transformed it!

Quick Update in case it helps

I taped up the leaky air filter hose, and this turned the turbine whistle into a muted high pitched whine.

I eventually managed to figure out how to turn the EBC off.

                      I chucked redex in it.

The truck now pulls like it never has before, and growls. It's much smoother too.

The next step is to get the valve clearances checked as this may get rid of some of the mechanical noise, and if I can find anyone I will get the pump timing checked too.

I have also ordered a rad cap and thermostat as I am going to drain and refill the coolant just in case there are any air pockets, or the thermostat isn't closing properly. The truck definately goes better after 5 miles of town driving, which suggests that it isn't warming up properly.

I will also try the throttle cable, as suggested. I have already discovered that if the floormat moves it restricts the pedal and knocks 10-20% off the travel!!

                      Have fun

                      Rob G

Well I've checked the throttle / cable... all okay.

Still have this annoying missing / spitting from the exhaut too, so it makes me wonder about fuel delivery rather than throttle...... Totally fed up now
