  • My cutting out - yes it's still there.

I have replaced the fuel filter housing with brand new - still the same problem.

    However, I have noticed something.

    Picture this.

I am slowing down as I approach lights and as is often the case I notice the revs (very quickly) flicker down to just above 500 and come back up to normal. So I slow down further and I get to the lights and stop, the engine then cuts out as I do..... This is what happenes to me normally.

However, sometimes if I am at the lights and quickly put the gearbox into neutral, before it cuts out (has to be well timed) the car will happily sit there and idle until the lights go onto green, where I put it into drive and away I go - again having to floor it before the engine cuts out altogether.

This isn't always possible as sometimes the car doesn't wait for me to stop before it cuts out. I can be slowing down for lights or a roundabout and I get down to 10 / 5 mph the engine cuts out then leaving me no opportunity to put it into neutral.

I am thinking of putting jubilee clips on all my fuel lines as I think the old rubber pipes might be getting hard and letting air in (the regular clips aren't tight enough anymore....?)

    What do you think?

Sounds like the idle-up solenoid in the transmission is sticking or the ECU isn't getting a correct signal from the crank sensor.

Whats the condition of your transmission fluid? level OK? Nice red wine colour?

Does the O/D light flash slowly on the dash when you're driving?

      Hiya.

I haven't checked my transmission fluid. How do I do that please?

I have no o/d light at all mate, aside from when I engage it on the gear knob and I don't do that......

Would all that be easy to fix? Could I do it or is it a mechanics job?

Could it possibly have something to do with the throttle position sensor, have hard they sometimes get nudged out of position, woth checking, it doesn't sound like a fuel fault, more like a sensor not doing what it should.

If you have the O/D light on then the O/D is disengaged. It's on when the light is off.

For the ATF fluid check you need to have the engine running and the gearbox warmed up from a good run. Then stop, put the gear lever into each gear in turn for a few seconds (with the brake engaged), then into N and check the gearbox dipstick under the bonnet (nearside, down towards the rear of the block - red top to it). The level should be between the two HOT marks and a nice clear red colour. If it's below the bottom line then it needs topping up (pour down the dipstick tube) and if it's a yeuky brown colour then it needs replacing ASAP.

If it is ticking over OK in neutral then it could be the torque converter dragging because of fluid problems or, as the others have said, could be sensor input problems.
