sounds like air is getting sucked in or the fuel is drawing back to the tank?

Stuff all that fuel nonsense, I'd say your glow plugs are not working, this may be for a number of reasons including, blown fuse, faulty relay, faulty glow plugs.

Pumping the throttle will do nothing, as this is a diesel engine and has an injection pump that will only put fuel to the cylinder when the engine is turning over as it is run from the cam belt.

Without your glow plugs working it will be a pig to start from cold but will start due to the ever inceasing amount of fuel being compressed in the cylinder.

Anyhoo, check your glow plugs..... do a search on the site and you'll find all sorts of electrical diagrams and stuff.

If the FUEL LINE is fractured you get these symptons as well.

my mates vw transporter has this exact problem now. tis why i asked if you noticed any fuel leaks.. but anyhow if there is a air leak it can mean air is getting in rather than fuel is getting out, therefore the fuel is draining back to the tank and so the pump has to first pull the fuel up to the pump and then pump it to the engine. so as why it COULD be taking ages to start.

you can test glow plugs by removing them and connecting them up to a car battery. they should glow hot. if they just get warm then theres your prob.

                    i doubt it! hehe

take it were looking at the fuze with the cap off? isnt that the fuel heater one though? what does it say on the lid that it represents?

my mates transporter is sorted since the diesel specialist put a valve in the line to stop the fuel draining back to the tank. its on the button now.

                        ok,
get a new fuse from toyotas then? there might be too much resistance in there making it take ages for the plugs to warm up proppery??
to test it may be you can swap it with the altinator one, its the same rating.
just to see if it starts on the button like.
but dont leave it running or drive it like that. if it starts like a new car switch it back off or else you could do some damage to the altinator

that could well be a pic of my fuse box, mines exactly the same. i reckon that may explain my starting troubles lol

you could also try a non-return valve between filter and pump, that'll give you enough diesel to sart immediately. I had that problem on mine, turned out to be old pipe(that looked brand new), but still left it with one way and its fine.
