  • New to hilux

Hi, I've recently purchased a 1990 2.4 non turbo surf. It was imported in 99 and for the year it's not in too bad condition. I've changed the alternator, as that wasn't working, and also the glow plugs. It seems that the previous owner thought of himself as an electrician, as he put switches inside to run both of the above. Anyway I think thats about sorted now. From looking at this forum, the engine check light is on and the rev counter isn't working although the motor seems to run ok. Has anyone had experience of the little orange light and is the rev counter cable driven? I'm also looking for a lock and key for the rear door. Would I have to go to Toyota, or is there somewhere else I can go for the lock? I've got the feeling I may be using this forum quite a lot. Great forum!

The tailgate lock will be the same as the doors, I.E. the same key fits.

        What's wrong with the lock?

The lock looks like it has been screwdrivered and with the problems that I've been reading about on here, I didn't want it to not spring back and burn the motor out, so I've disconnected it until I can get a new lock.

strange question, but I thought all the 2.4s were turbo. That's what I can understand from this http://www.hiluxsurf.eu/faq_general.htm#tech

Hope your wrong! If your right mine has something important missing but judging from the problems I'm having with the wiring, you may well be spot on.

May be the previous owner fitted a pick-up engine 'cos the head went on the original. Do the numbers match on the log book/ vin plate/ engine?

at the risk of an idiot of the week, but the 2.8 doesn't have a turbo? If so it may be one of those.

Ok.......the numbers match on the log book and vin plate.......as for the engine number......Im still trying to find out where it is I put two new batteries on and changed the alternator, as that wasn't working and all seemed ok. Left it on the front of the drive last night..........this morning.the batteries are flat. I then had to book the day off work, as I couldn't get the car out which was parked behind it. Just took it to an auto electrician, who has told me the regulator is knackered. So now all I have to do is find out where it is and order a new one. Hopefully the batteries aren't cooked. If someone knows where the regulator is, as it's seperate from the alternator and where the engine number should be, I'd be very grateful.

the engine number should be on the same plate as the VIN number. If it's the 2.4 then it should say 2L-T or 3L it's the 2.8

You could be right. It may be a 3L - 2.8ltr engine. This would maybe explain the check light always being on.The 3L engine and fuel pump will not have all the connections for the ECU.

It says 2L-T. I assume the T is supposed to stand for turbo, which may be the little bit thats missing. Is there a number on the engine itself that I can check? Have you any idea where the regulator is? I think I could be up for idiot of the week!!!!!!!!! Thanks very much for your help. I'm usually quite placid, but this is starting to twist my melon.

Not sure where (or if) the engine plate number is. I have a link that may help for electrical problems http://www.toyotasurf.asn.au/techsite/24table.htm the only problem is that the the site seemed to have crashed in the last few minutes, but it may work later on. Oh and welcome to owning a surf. You may hate working on it, but you won't want to change it for the world
