It says 2L-T. I assume the T is supposed to stand for turbo, which may be the little bit thats missing. Is there a number on the engine itself that I can check? Have you any idea where the regulator is? I think I could be up for idiot of the week!!!!!!!!! Thanks very much for your help. I'm usually quite placid, but this is starting to twist my melon.
I think the regulator is built into the alternator. I KNOW your truck should have a turbo though

Thanks very much for all your help fellas. after much searching I found the engine number. The engine is a 2L. So I think you were spot on Bushwacker..........it isn't the original engine.........in fact....it isn't the correct engine and as NiftyNev said thats the reason why the check engine light is on. Now all I have to do is find an alternator from a 2L engine that will work properly in the Surf. I originally thought that the bodged up wiring was to charge the batteries. Looking back and hearing the engine being pulled down when the dodgy switch was turned on, I now think that this was to take the charge away from the battery! I'm just hoping that I can get hold of an alternator to fit and that the two new batteries I put on aren't cooked. But apart from that, I like the car.
Any chance of taking it back, under the trades decriptions act, as if sold to you as a surf of its age and model, it should be a turbo D, and it ain't!
It sounds like it's gonna cost you a lot of money to fix the bodges that will enevitabaly come to light.
Hi,
The 1st gen`s up to 1990 had the 2LT motor. The separate regulator was mounted on the drivers side inner-wing. 2nd gen 1990> had the regulator built in to the alternator.
I think your motor has been butchered and if it was fitted with a pick-up 2L motor, it probably has high mileage.
