  • Intercooling

Now that my head worries are out of the way and its purring like a kitten, Im seriously thinking about fitting an intercooler. Ive read all the relevant threads I can find about whos done what and how, and everyone seems to go top mount and airflowed. I know scoops are cool but I dont really relish the idea of hacking a hole in the bonnet so Im looking at the option of front mounted, fan cooled or charged. The only prob I can see with front mounted is the distance the unit will be from the throttle body which could mean turbo lag. That could also be a problem if I found somewhere to tuck a side mounted unit, so I wondered if anyone has fitted a charged unit?

All intercoolers are charged. What exactly do you mean. Creating another intake from somewhere to feed air across the intercooler? If you knacker the bonnet, BTW, you can get another one for around £50 notes.

You shouldn't knacker it if You use masking tape and a new fine metal blade in a jigsaw. Just as long as the hole is the right size. If you're worried about doing it bring it to me, i'll use yours as a dummy run for mine........

water cooled with a remote ram or fan cooled rad. Not worried bout wrecking the bonnet, im ok with bodwork, it just the work involved. Once the scoop is on and blended then the bonnet will need a repaint and although I got the equipment ( gun, comp. etc) and the knowhow to use it, I either got to clear out the garage (theres a 2lt ford engined trike in there thats playing second fiddle since I got the surf bug) or wait till the summer comes and do it ouside.

Yeah, don't worry about that bonnet. Use a trooper vent (it has a much bigger coverage than hole, if you know what I mean) and you'll be fine. I cut the holes in mine with a nibbler. It's worth it just to get such a good tool.

I am a total at anything practical, so it will be fine. You don't even have to take the bonnet off if you nibble it.

Bonnet scoop and top mount is going to be by far the easiest method. It's finding space in the engine bay that's the problem, as you need to make sure the air can pass through without too much obstruction. I know someone managed it with it mounted off to one side, as well.

I noticed that theres quite a mix of coolers from various donors. All guesswork as to flow rates or are there any specs i can check out?

The main two criteria that determined what people have used have been:

                1) What will fit in the available space.

                2) What they can get hold of.

That's as scientific as it has been, upto just.

mmmm... but if the intercoler is too restictive wont it defeat the point of the turbo?

If you get one from a turbo engine, it won't be too restrictive.

I used a Mitsubishi L200 cooler - 2.5litre TD vs. 2.4litre TD surf, so no probs with restrictions. You could go to a 3.1l off a Trooper.

I did a top mount with a 1.5'' body lift. This allows access to the oil etc. Javars did a side mount of the same cooler but no body lift.

Someone on the aussie site has done a water cooled. Someone else there also fitted a front mount. He then ripped it out and top mounted it coz it wasn't that good as a front mount.

http://www.toyotasurf.asn.au/techsite/performance.htm for all the aussie versions.

                        stoopid kwestchun

so... these intercoolers... they act to cool the air, making it denser.. How much cooler does it make it then? and has anyone (lovely boyo) got any figures for improved performance etc?

                        i.e. is it worth doing?

Its worth doing - low tech and reliable and easy mod.

Figures - mmmm - non scientific but - a noticeable increase in power - I'd say at least 10%. Hills that would sap power before the mod I can now gain speed going up the hill.

The pipe from the turbo to the 'hot' side of the cooler gets hotter than you can comfortably hold. The pipe from the 'cooled' side to the manifold gets warm, but never hot.
