grating gears

on my 2.4 auto, the 4WD selector works a treat, as does the hi-lo box. the problem is that I cant switch from hi to lo or vice versa with the engine running cos the gears grate when i do. never tried it in the move, only when parked up. Should I have to switch the engine of to change ratios, or is something broken?

You need to select neutral or park first.

Mine still grates in N but fine in P.

thanks for replies, but even in park or neutral the hi-lo shift grates. only way it dont is with the engine off. the hi-lo box does actually work though, once engaged. is there some kind if clutch in the transfer box that could be knacked?
