  • overheating:need help??

i was just wondering if someone with a bit of experience/knowledge could give me some advice

i recently bought a 2.4 surf. it started to overheat after a couple of weeks.
the coolant kept filling the expansion tank.

i then fitted a new thermastat and cap but still did it. oil was also mixing with the water.

i took it to a mechanic and of course he suspected it was the head. so a new head was fitted with gasket and new head bolts.

To my dispair it is still filling the expansion tank and beginning to overheat. but now the water is clear, with no sign of oil.

The mechanic was left scratching his head as he can not beleive it.

i have a couple of question.

is there a possibility of the block being warpped or something like that.
Or have i and the mechanic missed something stupid that would cause this problem?

All advice and or remedies would be very appreciated as i am totally at my wits end.

    thanks..

first things first is there any air locks still in the system and i would be inclined to renew the thermostat and rad cap again

Im wanting to know this as well as i have a new thermostat to fit at the weekend.

Is there a bleed screw anywhere??? My old skyline had a screw at the top of the engine next to the inlet manifold that you undid to let any air out. Very simple.

have all heaters set to hot and turn on to full power start engine and take rad cap off.and keep topping till you cant get no more in or until all the air is out put rad cap on and go for a drive around.Let engine cool down and re-check coolant levels again. If low then repeat the above again

Also, when you refill the cooling system, best to do it with a narrow neck
funnel, or just pour the coolant in very slowly. It minimises your chance of
              getting airlocks to start with.

Having the fans blasting won't make any difference!

Make sure the truck is on level ground though.

                  overheating

                  ok.

i flushed the cooling system and fitted a new thermostate and rad cap.
i tryed to bleed the system and i think i was successful.
however the expansion bottle is still filling up after about 30 minutes of driving.
one thing i did notice is that the radiator is hot at the top but the sides and bottom hose stay reasonably cooler. is this normal.

has any body any ideas. cheers

When the engine is cold, make sure the expansion bottle is filled no further
than the max mark. Make sure your coolant is upto level under the rad cap.
The expansion bottle will fill as you drive. That's why it is there. As long as
all along the top of the rad is getting hot, it should be fine. The bottom
should be cooler. That's how it works.

If I was you I would take rad off and give it a flow test to see it the water is running ok.

                        overheating

just noticed today that the ATF is white. the radiator must be leaking into the oil cooler. would this be correct,
