  • rad problem could it be more?

    ok here goes

i noticed a little rust on the top of my rad a few weeks ago and paid little attention to it.

one night i was driving home from work and i thought i had driven through a big puddle as water blew all over my windscreen , a minute later the car overheated. i stopped and opened the door and the smell of glycol hit me, so i knew what had happened before i even popped the bonnet.

the radiator had huge split in it, i let the car cool and then limped the 2 miles home during which i had to stop again.

i ordered a new radiator from roughtrax next day delivery and fitted it,

by the way when you order one of these its $$$$$$ hard to get the atf hoses to fit to it, i ended up sawing some of the pipe from the old rad off and connecting the hoses to this, then connecting the the old pipe to the new rad with washing machine hose and joobly clips.

so new rad new coolant and atf job seems a goodun, apart from i had a bit of oil leaking from the filler cap (probably due to overheating) this seems to have stopped now.

HOWEVER although the car seems to function normally i came off the motorway last night and smelt the oil burning, so i pulled up at my mothers house (less than a mile) and popped the bonnet. upon inpection it was easy to see the problem... the oil filler cap wasnt on it was lying about a foot to one side and oil had sprayed the top of the engine. i checked the oil and didnt appear to have lost much, replaced the cap and drove home with no ill effects.

needless to say this is worrying me as im not sure if its a loose oil filler cap or something far more sinister.

having done a search on here i found that another guy had the same problem as me with the rad (ferretmanbu i think) and when searching more posts by him it seems that a couple of months later his head went.

is there anything i can do to prevent this happening to me? has it already happened? (i dont seem to be getting $$$$ty emissions with water in em), what do i do if it has happened, im pretty good at working through most problems and replacing bits on me car, and i aint afraid to get dirty but im a bit intimidated by the idea of doing a head solo, and im not sure where to go to get it done up here in sunny newcastle.

make me happy boys gimme the good advice please

Hi Parn what vehicle have you got,if you put the details in your profile it will help everyone to help solve your problem easier.
Are your heater hoses blocked to the rear heater by any chance.it may pay to totally flush the cooling system and clear any blockages that may be there and refill and see how that goes. Also renew your rad cap and thermostat the same time.HTH

sorry stormforce its a 2.4 td ln130 surf

i dont think any of the water hoses were blocked as i drained all the coolant when i took the rad off, im not haveing a problem with it overheating or anything but i didnt replace the thermostat or radcap. is this likely to be a cause of the oil filler cap popping off?
or is this just something to help prevent head nastiness

The oil filler cap is probably nothing, it may not have been tighten up properly and vibrated loose, or has been over tightened and stripped the thread.

The only other issue is has the head cracked when it overheated. The only way to know for sure is to the coolant checked for combustion gasses. This is the only definate way of checking for sure apart from pulling the head off.

        Good luck.

It's done using one of these. Squeeze and release the bulb and any combustion gases present in the cooling system will turn the blue liquid green.

Garage should have one. I only paid A$20 for the one I have second hand but I think they are quite expensive. I'd check for gases in expansion tank after a good run. Better than removing the rad cap when engine is hot.

well it looks like my oil leak has stopped and been replaced by an atf leak

this has gone on for a week now and i havent really had time to look at it and sort it.

however my car is now stranded a coule of miles from home as it looks like the atf hoses have finally popped off the rad.

is it feasible just to join the 2 hoses thus bypassing the radiator, will this damage the car in some way

                  whaddya reckon guys?

hope its gonna be ok cos in about half an hour im gonna give it a go just to try and get the $$$$$$ thing off the felltop and back home

ok so i got the atf pipes together and bypassed the radiator, went to fill up the transmission fluid and found that the missus had bought dextron III, so i went ahead and filled up anyway as the car was in the middle of the fell and i wanted to go home. it seemed to work fine.

have i done something horrendously bad ? is my car gonna die a horrible death as im pretty sure a 2.4td ln130 is meant to have dex II in it and im also pretty sure its meant to go thru the radiator

Dextron II has been replaced dextron III.

I don't want to ask you about the second bit!!

yeah fuller explanation necessary i think.

i got a roughtrax rad which doesnt seem to have very good atf fittings on it and i cant get my hoses attached to it. so i modified and extended the hoses with some washing machine hose, and this seemed to attach a lot better. however since then i have developed a leak which eventually popped one of the hoses off ( so it wasnt that good a solution after all). so i have joined the 2 hoses that go to the radiator, so that it bypasses it completely. i did this tonight as my car had given up as i was crossing a felltop in derwentside, it was cold and dark and it was the best solution i could come up with at the time.

so i am struggling to see a way forwards now as the roughtrax radiator has very short screw thread type connectors on it for the atf hoses, (when i say short i mean they extend just over 5mm from the radiators body). i think i may phone roughtrax and see if they have any kind of adaptor or connector to make this work, as i cant see how anyone could get an atf hose to connect to the $$$$$$ thing.

Are the outlets on the rad threaded? maybe get some B.S.P. male hose connectors and screw those in with plenty of PTFE tape on the threads.,
