ok here goes
i noticed a little rust on the top of my rad a few weeks ago and paid little attention to it.
one night i was driving home from work and i thought i had driven through a big puddle as water blew all over my windscreen , a minute later the car overheated. i stopped and opened the door and the smell of glycol hit me, so i knew what had happened before i even popped the bonnet.
the radiator had huge split in it, i let the car cool and then limped the 2 miles home during which i had to stop again.
i ordered a new radiator from roughtrax next day delivery and fitted it,
by the way when you order one of these its $$$$$$ hard to get the atf hoses to fit to it, i ended up sawing some of the pipe from the old rad off and connecting the hoses to this, then connecting the the old pipe to the new rad with washing machine hose and joobly clips.
so new rad new coolant and atf job seems a goodun, apart from i had a bit of oil leaking from the filler cap (probably due to overheating) this seems to have stopped now.
HOWEVER although the car seems to function normally i came off the motorway last night and smelt the oil burning, so i pulled up at my mothers house (less than a mile) and popped the bonnet. upon inpection it was easy to see the problem... the oil filler cap wasnt on it was lying about a foot to one side and oil had sprayed the top of the engine. i checked the oil and didnt appear to have lost much, replaced the cap and drove home with no ill effects.
needless to say this is worrying me as im not sure if its a loose oil filler cap or something far more sinister.
having done a search on here i found that another guy had the same problem as me with the rad (ferretmanbu i think) and when searching more posts by him it seems that a couple of months later his head went.
is there anything i can do to prevent this happening to me? has it already happened? (i dont seem to be getting $$$$ty emissions with water in em), what do i do if it has happened, im pretty good at working through most problems and replacing bits on me car, and i aint afraid to get dirty but im a bit intimidated by the idea of doing a head solo, and im not sure where to go to get it done up here in sunny newcastle.
