right just put new stat and rad cap on topped up coolant put both heaters on full started engine let it warm up and it got to just under half way but the heaters are still cold and i also still have white'ish smoke coming out of exhaust on tick over and when i turned off the engine coolant poured out of the header tank. someone please tell me it's not bad news

If the smoke is hard to see, then it sounds normal. If it was coolant in the exhaust trust me, you WOULD have noticed it!
You need to run the engine with the rad cap off for a while, topping up if necessary. Then switch off and leave for an hour or two and re-check the level. If it has dropped then top up again and leave for another half hour.
If the coolant can still be seen in the thermostat housing, then all the air should have escaped and you can re-fit the rad cap.
When topping up the coolant, make sure the truck is on level ground, if that is not possible, make sure it's facing uphill.

For reference the part number for a QH thermostat, 88 degree for the 2.4 engine is QTH321

Yes, put new thermostat in exactly as it came out, with the hole at the top. Only coolant was what came out when I took the old stat out.
Have been bleeding the system and filling it up, but seems to be kicking out just as much as I have been putting in! Still no heater working.
