  • Power loss going uphill

Hi i've just bought my first Surf,(its fantastic) 1992 ssr-x 2.4td. When on motorways or uphill roads the power seems to totally dissappear. If i am travelling at about 80mph and approach a hill it slows down pretty fast. is this normal or is there a problem that needs addressing. Anyone have any ideas

Yep, there is a problem, it's got the 2.4 engine fitted!

With the 3ltr it only happens with the caravan on the back, usually cured by dropping it out of overdrive - give it a try.

But keep an eye on the temp gauge!!

did you check around the back when you bought it , it sounds like you may have a caravan. burn it.

What's he gonna tow the caravan with if he burns the Surf.

I can assure you if there were a caravan attached, the lot would have received a can of petrol and a match

                No, 80mph is not normal!

You've bought a 14year old two tonne truck, its not sports car.

Mine doesn't slow down when going up hill - it actually speeds up!

In the green circle in the pic. check that it's on securely, in the yellow circle is the air temp sensor, check that it's there and not dangling down under the air filter housing. In the red circle is the turbo pressure sensor, check all the rubber pipes going to and from it are securely attatched.

I'll try it first thing Cheers....PS ive read many reports on the turbo light. some say it should come on and others say it should stay off "who's right"?(mine only comes on green with the ignition but goes off and stays off when started and driving)

On aGen2 (which is what you've got) the turbo light should come on when the turbo is boosting, generally above 2200 rpm (ish).

The Gen 3 light should be off, unless there is a problem..

Sounds like your little pipe has come off the turbo sensor..

also, 3.0 2nd gen Surfs have no turbo light.
