            Idler arm bushes

Thanks lads, found this site from a post by Rob that goes into details, it looks like just a couple of plastic bushes and a grease seal needed - http://www.4x4wire.com/toyota/maintenance/idler/

              Hi Matt

Do you have a crystal ball or something. You posted your reply at almost the same time as I did. That is really weird.

I usually keep receipts for any parts I purchase as it comes in handy for letting others know part numbers. There is also a lot of info on this at the Aussie site.

yeah, its £10 worth of parts, verses £90 for the arm, no contest!

Plus, sorry to be picky but it's not a Steering Rack idler arm. The Surf has a recirculating Ball steeing box not a steering rack. Only the 3rd gens onwards have rack and pinion steering and then they don't have an idler arm.

                      Cheers

When you get the thing apart you might find (like I did) that the plastic bushes are fine but the steel idler arm has rusted and worn away due to water and grit ingress. Might not be the cheap fix you anticipate? A sloppy idler arm will fail an MOT test.

Sorry to be picky too but it sure looks like an idle arm to me
Agreed rack and pinions dont need one they have track rods.
We should agree to differ, on a slight name mistake, I'm new here

Is it worth drilling into the idler housing and fitting a grease point does anyone think?

                            Woodie

If the ball joint end of Idler Arm is worn replace the whole assembley.
Check shaft end where bushes are because they can bend and new bushes will wear quickly.
                            Grease nipple? I wouldn't bother

Yep, thanks, will do, I've taken the surf off the road for now anyway so as not to cause more wear, I should have the bushes before the weekend so I'll get to it then.
