well heres the bad news the dip stick is covered in water and there is a milky residue on it, barley any oil on the stick. so i'm guessing the gasket has gone or the head. oh well we all tryed to sort it. just a quick question how would i know if the head has been replaced before??? and how can i tell if it's just the gasket????

Take it back to the dealer Sledge, get THEM to fix it (AND pay for it) or get a refund.

Yes, take it back, it's knackered.

You can only really tell if the head's been replaced before by seeing a receipt for it. They all look pretty much the same.

It's normally the head's that go rather than the gaskets. When you get the head off, you'll see. That's pretty much the 100% way to tell.

well i'm gonna try an take it back to the guy if i can get hold of him. not that i hold much hope that he's going to do anything as i don't think it got a warrenty. if not i guess it will be trading standards as he has sold me a duff motor.

If they are a trader then by law the vehicle has to be 'fit for purpose', and if it was sold as working and it's dead inside a week then he'd have a hard time trying to prove that it was. Basically just turn up and mention Trading Standards a couple of times.

If it was a private sale, then I'm sorry but it's Buyer Beware, and your up a certain creak, without a certain instrument.

well heres the bad news he's not a registered dealer. and trading standards say theres not much they can do as it sounds to them like wear and tear.
i've also tryed getting hold of him with no luck. i would go down there but it's an hours drive from me and i have kids to sort out.
                      any advice would help,

so i guess i'm f***ed i'd like to go down there and beat him but that won't get me anywhere.

Yeah, probably best to aovid any violence.

I would still get hold of him and at least try and get him to sort you out. You never know, he may have a conscience.

Otherwise, it kind of depends on how you acquired the truck in the first place. If there's an advert that says it runs fine etc etc. you might have a case for small claims (for £35 or whatever it is, it's worth a crack). If you just bought it off the street, yeah, you're up that creek.

As for what to do, it depends on how much you bought it for. Less than about £1,500 and you may as well break it or sell it on ebay as a non-runner. Anymore and it's probably worth a trip up the M3 to see TonyN and find out what's wrong with it.

hello, this is mrs sledge! we origionally got the car out of compensation money, otherwise it would have been something that we would struggle to afford with 4 kids 7 and under and another on the way! we were going to put some extra seats in it for the family to fit as the regulations are changing!
trouble is, now the tank is not working so can't get it anywhere! can't afford to waste 1,500 and can't afford another car!

hubby is brilliant when it comes to petrol engines but the diesel tank is a whole new ballgame! how easy would it be to fit a head on it?

Have a look at 'Head Replacement on a 2LTE Engine' here:

Apparently a day or two for someone with the tools and the skills. Neither of which are me.

My Dad and I did one in about 3 days, taking it at a fairly leisurely pace. Read the notes Sancho pointed to, and take your time. It's nothing that someone with confidence with spanners can't achieve, but it is a two man job if you don't have access to a hoist (them heads are damn heavy).

well folks the dealer has got back to me, he's offered a full refund or 750 quid. so what i decided is take the 750 and get the head fixed at toni's. cause i love surfs and the last thing i want to do is get another one and have same probs. at least with this one i'll know it will be sound once done.
