    Flat battery?

Starter motor contacts. Do you hear a clicking noise?

      Beaten to it again.

Is the engine turning over but not firing, or is it just turning over sluggishly?

battery is fine, starter motor fine, it seems like its something to do with the engine.

We still don't know what surf you have.

Could be that your timing belt has slipped a couple of teeth or worse, snapped and one or more valves are touching piston.
What work were you doing on the engine before the problem occured?

So is the starter actually causing the engine to turn, but the engine just doesn't fire (sounds like it normally does, just engine fails to start)? That would most likely be a fuelling problem (i.e. none getting to the engine).

If the starter is spinning up, but not turning the engine (sounds of high-speed whirring) then it's most likely the starter solenoid isn't engaging properly (if at all).

it's a 2.4td ssr g89. basically i bought it 2 days ago, got told it had a new rad fitted, on drive home it started to over heat got home ok, when engine cooled top up water. then yesterday it overheated again on a short journey and the top rad pipe(the one that goes to thermostat housing) popped off, i let it cool down and put the pipe back on and topped up with water again. got home and look on forum about overheating and thought that the problem might be an air blockage. followed instructions on how to solve it, left it over night and check the level this morning. tryed to start engine, would turn over but not fire. i noticed the air intake pipe had split and replaced it. tryed to start it again, and it would not turn over although the starter seems to be working ok!

              any help would be great

hope that this info helps, i would like to get back on the road (or off) asap!

              thanks!

O.K. now we know the engine hasn't siezed.
Try switching the ignition on and leaving it on for about 20 secs, then switch off and repeat for another 20 secs then try starting, holding the throttle pedal to the floor.

worst case scenario... your head has gone and it wont turn over cos its hydro locked. also hose blowing off might mean your thermostat is stuck. i wouldnt try too hard to start it till you are certain theres no water in the bores...good luck and i hope i am wrong..
                    it's in me shed, mate.

Sounds like it's jiggered to me. I, being a lazy and rude little b@stard, would take it back where I got it and complain loudly and obnoxiously.

Have you checked all the belts are on?

Also, the overheating, water loss and popping hose might point towards the cooling system getting pressurised, but let's not go there yet.....

Well, depends how good you are with engines.

Like Chillitt suggested, check your thermostat is OK first. If not, take it out and order a new one from Roughtrax to replace it.

It sounds like your problems stem from cooling (hence the new rad) and you need to get it sorted, but could have extended to a cracked head and something else that follows on from that.

If you're mechanically minded, keep asking questions and between us we'll get it sorted. If you're not, get TonyN's contact details off his site www.4x4toys.co.uk and get in touch with him. He'll fix it for you cheaper than any other garage, he'll do it properly and he's not that far from you.

Like I said, I would go back to whoever sold it to me in the first place and at least ask some questions.

                              Yep.

The main problem with the head being cracked (in a day to day context, ignoring the damage to the block etc in the long term) is that you run the risk of the engine suddenly spitting all of the coolant out and overheating at any time.
