    Hoping and lanes

    Hello,
Just to say I have fitted a new stat and rad cap. So just gotta hope for a few days.

Heaters on, ex. tank up to the mark and rad full. Will have to keep checking as the last of the air comes out.

I will keep the thread running as to when I think the truck has settled in to the new coolant.

Cheers for all the help and advice. If this works it saved me taking the head off for no good reason at all. Which would have been a pain in the ...

Anyone around Cambridgeshire (Huntingdon area) know any good green lanes, or are going out for a bit of a journey around? Would be nice to meet up with some other keen Surfers.

      advise

hi guys, i,m new to the forum. I have a 1992 ssrx 2.4 td with a cracked head. I,m lucky enough to have a good mate do the work but would like some advise on where to get a cylinder head from and any other tips that might be of use...many thanks:

Stevo, at the Engine Co in stockport. You can find him in the members list here or his advert is on the top of some pages. About £800 I think but everyone who has fitted one seems to have had no probs.

              So far, so good

              Morning all,
So it seems that the rad cap and new stat have done the job. Still keeping my fingers crossed. Thanks to anyone that kept there fingers crossed for me over the weekend?
Has used no coolant since Thursday eve. Done some gentle green lane and about 50 miles, no long journey though.

So as it stands i would like to offer a very big thank you to Matt, Trev and Vince for taking the time out.

My truck was booked to be stripped to have the head done, so if this is the solution and carries on as is I owe you all a beer.

My faith is back. The car in front is a Toyota

              Cheers R

I had some major overheating problems with my 2.4, which seemed to be cured by taking the thermostat out, but now in different situations, such as hills (actually the Alps) it heats up again. What are the symptoms of driving without a stat before I start pulling the radiator out? Cheers

Overheating, poor fuel economy, excess engine wear. Without a thermostat,
you can end up overcooling or undercooling the coolant, which will lead to one
or more of the above symptoms.

Edit: Just changed pure to poor. That'll teach me to check my word selection in the
                  wee hours.

Like Matt said, in some cases no stat will cause it to overheat, without any means of regulating coolant flow the coolant will get pumped straight through the rad and back into the engine before the rad has cooled it down enough. Especially at high engine speeds when the pump is spinning fast.

                      Still using a bit

                      Hello,
Back again. Just keepinhg the thread up to spead on the 3.0 SSRX as I promised.

Having changed Rad Cap, Stat and coolant, run up and used with heaters on and off to make sure bubbles out it seemed good. Seems still to be using some coolant. 100ml per 100 miles. I did overfill the expansion tank and that got used up to the full level. I guess that kinda makes sense, so was more my fault. However I try to keep it bang on the fill mark now and still seems to use a little.

Still can't find any leaks, no water in oil or oil in water. Can't see any steam from the exhaust.

I am planning to put a pressure tester on it again this eve and see if it holds pressure in the system with a cold engine. Will pump up to 17 psi and leave to stand. If it stays pressured I cant see that the head gasket or head can be damaged. Must be fine? Cold heads would have a bigger crack than a hot one.

I will spend more time rolling around on the floor with pressure in the system and try to find a drip of water on a pipe or connection. Kinda hope I do so I can stop worrying. My wife drives the Surf most days so have to make sure it stays save and sound for her.
I was hoping to do a Wales run green laning followed by maybe Morroco late this year or early next. However I would not use the Hi Lux until the water use stops. I have many machines around the farm that work much harder any never use and coolant. In fact I have never had any vehicle that uses coolant. Its darn annoying at the moment to keep checking a topping up.

I'll keep the post up to spead as I keep a very close eye on this.

Cheers and good weekends to you all.

                      R

Once your coolant level settles, any extra you put in the expansion tank will
either be chucked out of the tank or just stay there. It's nothing to worry about.
As long as you keep an eye on the level under the rad cap, thats the important
thing. That amount of water you're losing is fairly small, which would tend to
suggest either a slight leak in your rad somewhere, or possibly perished hoses.
With regards to seeing from where it's leaking is awkward. Once the engine bay
is upto full temp, the coolant leaks tend to literally disappear straight away as
soon as they touch a hot surface, so it can be frustratingly hard trying to spot
                        the seep point.

                          Steam from exhaust

                          Hello,
                          Cheers for the response Matt.

The water use got heavy over Friday and Sat, so tested again. Up to 100 ml for 10 miles.
She is now starting badly, very lumpy. Changed fuel filter no better. Had a mate come round with pressure tester. Ran it up. Ran at 17 PSI and rising. Then we noticed with a blip on the throttle that steam comes out of the exhaust. Seems the head Gasket or head has failed after all. Bit of a pain. Chatted to Stevo today and once the truck is stripped will see what we need.
Maybe the whole head, maybe a gasket. It will have a full pressure test so all will be clear. Thanks to all for all the advice along the way. Gonna be 2 weeks as my mate is a proper qualified mechanic, but runs a full time business that is so booked up with work he is fixing the Surf in my workshop in his spare time. Nice chap to give up his time.

As I pomised before I will keep the string up to date with what is found when the major surgery starts.

                          Good weeks to you all.

                          R

                              Very, very busted,

I am not pleased to say that Mrsurf is on the money, nearly. He noted a cracked head, which could be kinda understood as one crack? Here comes the fun bit.......

I was told by the chap that cleaned up the head in a parafin bath it had 4 cracked combustion chambers and cracks between 3 pistons! Not seen it myself after the clean but have no reason not to believe him.

Big thanks to Stevo for a super fast turn around on my replacement. Good service and on time. I was hoping to have it sorted over the weekend but the expert had his surprise birthday bash, hence as much use as a chocolate fireguard. Should be sorted in the next 3 days.

                              Starting to miss it now
