  • turbo unit

My 1991 ssr has been a bitch to start recently and I have tried a few different things to sort it, a new fuel primer and filter, the glow plugs checked and I also had a mechanic look at it and he said, basicly the turbos gone, its blowing oil, infact when he checked the oil level it was almost empty. Any way its almost impossible to get hold of one but I found this and wondered if it would suit my car, if anyone here knows id be very greatfull

AFAIK, it's the right one for a 2.4 TD Surf...

Ask the seller the question, to be sure..

    It just does, OK?

I dont know if its deffinitly knackered but how much would changing the seals cost, also someone told me id have to be carefull about the manifolds matching and if I did by the ebay one would I still have to change the seals and where would I get them.
Cheers for answering, this is really p*ssing me off, im having to drive without the turbo light coming on which means only 2000rpm!!!

i dont know if this helps but yours is a 91 reg that possibly make yours a non efi engine if so you will need to chek that avenue of probs out as well! sorry

                I'm not 100% sure if it's a d.i.y. job. Have a look/ contact here...

                http://www.turbotechnics.co.uk/docs/index.htm

                It's roughly £200 for a rebuild
                £400 for a new turbo.

Just a thought, you say it was 'blowing oil' and that the oil level showed that.
The low oil on the dash would have alerted you of the low oil level.
Just because there is no oil showing on the dipstick dosen't mean that the oil has all gone. It takes 8 liters from empty!
Have you had a look at the turbo impeller? remove the rubber elbow going onto it and see what the turbo spins like with your finger. there should be absolutely no resistance when you spin it.
Also check for bearing play as well it shouldn't be too pronounced.
There may be a little oil residue in the tubes going into to turbo, this is normal.
Hope all this helps in some way.

Im still trying to figure out what I need to buy, I emailed Turbotechnics a couple of times and they havent bothered getting back to me , I dont really fancy having to take things apart as I dont know what im looking at anyway.
I was told if it still whistles loud its ok, it does but theres oil coming out. Ive been driving without the turbo coming in and leaving it tick over for a while after parking but the f*cking thing still wouldnt start this morning.
Nearly every week im having to get a tow start, ive gotta get this sorted otherwise im gonna have to sell it cheap just to get rid of the hastle, im thinking about seeing if this blokes still got this unit http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...MEWA%3AIT&rd=1
I really need some help as im clueless and need to know what to look out for or purchase

i may be saying the wrong thing here but basic principles for starting a diesel would be compression-supplied by pistons and closed valves, fuel combustable contaminated with oil or not it will still burn, glow plugs the heat source for the cold days
                        and of course air.

in order for all those to work in unison the pump timimg has to be spot on (well almost)

you can test glow plugs guys just by measuring their resistance with a multimeter,, bus bar removed of course otherwise they will all read the same.
now a higher resistance is great whilst a lower resistance is poor hence it wont heat up as fast or as much as the others.

                        rule of thumb
                        cheapest simplist options first

blowing oil or not a turbo is still a turbo as long as it has blades and is spinning

hope this helps,, speak to a diff mechanic

O.k. Firstly, when it's running, does the green tubo light come on, on the dash?
Is there a drastic drop in engine power compared to when you first got the truck?
Does the red light, next to the turbo light come on at all when driving?
Re; your starting problem, Is the glowplug fuse o.k.? it's under the bonnet in a plastic box.
There's a rubber pipe that comes out of the top of the engine near where you put oil in, pull it off a make sure it's not blocked.

I checked the plugs and they all glow fine, I bought a new fuel primer pump and filter after being told that the fuel was finding its way back to the tank but its still doing the same. I have since been told that the oil is coming out of the turbo which is why the oil level was low and that while its warm it'll start ok but cold and the oil congeals, which is why after turning over for a while by towing it starts, does this sound right?

Ive had it three years, its the last 18 months its done it, trouble starting, its always smoked a lot when the turbo comes in, the turbo light comes on but I'm driving at the moment so it doesnt, so I can start it the morning after. The red light doesn't come on and I haven't checked the fuse but the plugs are working
