I've been looking at running on oil for a long time, but never chanced it as if it kills the engine the £1000 to fix it extra means that you won't have saved much in fuel duty.
There's two things that worry me. First is that I have been told vegetable oil has a different flash point to diesel which can screw the timing up or bend sensitive things in the engine over time. Secondly is the glyserine or glyserol in the oil clogs up your injectors, which again will cost lots to replace. Apparently it's not the hardest thing in the world to make bi-diesel by taking the glyserol out of the vegetable oil and then you have the perfect substitute, has anyone got any advice on this, or have I been told a load of nonsence, is veg oil perfectly fine?

I use oil from aldi 43p per litre @ 15 litres of oil and 20 litres of diesel.
always lumpy at first (even on straight diesel) but then ok.I think it runs a liittle better all round on straight.2.4 auto 1993

I was referring to what people are using for this time of the year, maybe i should have done this on a new thread.

I've been running mine on an SVo/Diesel mix for the last 9 months now and have had no probs at all. my power and mpg don't seem to differ from when i was on straight diesel (25-32mpg) during summer months i was using 40ltrs of svo and topping up with diesel, nothing else. during this winter where temps have reached -4C, i've been running her on 25-30ltrs of svo and topping up with diesel with no starting probs at all.
I must also suggest that if there are any readers out there who are looking at using svo mixes in any other vehicls check that the fuel pump is up to the extra viscosity as it has been proved that some factory fitted pumps such as Lucas die after a few hundred miles.
Might i also add that there are some legalities that everyone might want to consider looking into as well. seeing as though all anyone driving behind can smell is the lush scent of a deep fat frier!
if anyone is interested let me know and i'll gladly email the relevent literature and info.didn't mean to be a bore but it's just something that worried me when i first started using it.

I've been running Veg since September last year.
I started slowly by adding about 6ltrs to a full tank. I am currently using 24ltrs of Oil and topping up on Diesel. With whats left in the tank already being Veg/Derv mix, I reckon the ratio is 50/50. With the very cold morning recently, I've been a little concerned about gelling, but so far no problem starting. It's lumpy for about 2 seconds, then I flick the Fast Idle button and it straightens up immediately.

In the summer I'll be experimenting with 90% Veg 10% Unleaded as I've now got my filter system set up at home to filter WVO (Waste Oil)

I get about 20ltrs a week from work for free. Filter it to 5 microns, check the acid content, then bung it in & top up with Dino.

I'll also be getting one of Philips Heated Fuel Cats once I have the cash.

The Goatindustries Forum will answer all your questions, but the pople aren't as nice as on here!

If you have any questions, feel free to drop me a PM. I've looked into this subject in very fine detail, becuase I am concerned about the wellbeing of my motor.

But, I'm a big believer in using Veg, and the Surf is the perfect car to run it in.

PS/ I wouldn't get into BioDiesel production unless you are really interested in it, becuase there are lots of dangerous chemicals and the process is quite in-depth.

I heard using petty in ya motor can do all your seals in? petrol can attack em and you end up with oil everywhere! (maybe!!!) yours been alright i take it thou! also if im using veg oil from tesco take it dont have to worry bout the acid content as not been used for frying mars bars but whats all this bout microns should i worry bout that with SVO or is that just a WVO thing? ps wher ya get them heated fuel cats take it ya mean their differnt from normal ones!
                              slowely, slowely catching the monkey
