      Vauxhall Astra....

Was chating to a mate in the pub last night... having a moan about the usual stuff... the mrs... the kids... cost of things

then we started talking about the veg oil I run my van on!

by the way i use a 20/80 mix in cold wether and 50/50 in hot weather(in litres thats 11l SVO to a full tank in cold and 27.5l in warm weather in a 55l tank)

he wanted to know: he has a 1996 Vauxhall astra Tdi (1.8 i think he said) - is this suitable for veg oil / has anyone experimented??

I have done several "google" searches but can't seem to find any answers

      any help appreciated

i know of a couple of 360 machine operators have used it in their vauxhaul vans but they were 2 or 3 yrs newer and they were up and down the country week in week out

IIRC there were 2 different 1.7l engines fitted to this range at around this time, a vauxhall/opel one (whose cambox looks the same as the 8v petrol motor), and an isuzu one. Just to confuse things more, I've seen reports of both engines being fitted with differing types of pump and as its the pump design which is most crucial in using veg-oil I would suggest that determining the type/make of pump fitted is essential in such a vehicle before experimenting with using any veg-oil.

no mate thats about 2 thirds full but i know there room for it if the guage is below a quarter tank.. keeps it consistant... as it gets cold ill go to 15 quids worth of dino, or even(gulp) 20 quids worth!
                it's in me shed, mate.

I run a straight 50% mix - no messing about with additives or petrol etc. in very cold weather I run a 30% mix with more diesel than oil.

cold starting can be a bit 'lumpy' but this soon irons itself out within a minute.

But what is 30% & 50% in (LTRS)

i get down to about 1/4 tank full and put 12ltrs veg oil in then 20ltrs of diesel, little bit lumpy first thing lately, (colder weather?) but soon clears and if anything probably runs better than with just straight diesel, only additives being redex diesel treatment regularly.

Take your fuel tank as being 100%.... If 50%= half full or empty ( whatever does it for you),,,,25% = quarter.... Oh yeh i've got to mention 75% = three quarter and sooooooooooooo on...... Hope you sus it xx

mmm basic maths here 50% = half (if your tank is 55 litres then that's exactly 27.5 litres

30% is roughly a third (it should be 33.33333% but I find that hard to measure lol)

Seriously, the best thing you can do is to start at putting in 10 litres and see how it goes, then slowly increase the mixture until you're happy with it.

Oh yea, just work on the basis that an EMPTY tank is 60 litres and you wont go far wrong - but remember that when you add any fuel/oil - you're actually adding to what's already in there so you may need to work out the correct mixture rate taking into account the percentage that's already in there - otherwise the Flux capacitor will not function and your engine will grumble like a granny on blue smarties.

but do percentages affect the cloaking device?????
Did I mention I have a BLUE one

Not sure what people are using at this time of year
But i have, from an empty tank or as near as without the light coming on
And NO fuel heater of any sort fitted i might add.
Chucked in ( 21 ltrs of veg + 3 ltrs of unleaded and toped to brim with diesel )
Well i lost some on floor and all over car actually as the bl**dy pump didn't cut off
But will see how it runs anyway.
                              Regards

                                Simple mathematical calculations

                                60 L tank * 0.3 (ie 30%) = 18 L of Veg-Oil leaves 42 Litres of Diesel
                                60 L tank * 0.5 (ie 50%) = 30 L of Veg-Oil leaves 30 Litres of Diesel

                                65 L tank * 0.3 = 19.5 L of Veg-Oil leaves 45.5 Litres of Diesel
                                65 L tank * 0.5 = 32.5 L of Veg-Oil leaves 32.5 Litres of Diesel
                                Gaz
