2LT the real engine !! not those poofy EFI types !!

I have flushed the system, ''tubed'' the rad and now have full control over the electric fan including an overtemp warning system.
I have the same year Surf. How did you set you your overtemp warning system and fan control?

    Cheers, Paul

hi nige just multiply the 159000km by 0.6214 and you should get 98802 miles

The backbone of the whole system is the thermo switch in the thermostat housing. This is NC (normally closed ) and provides and earth to whereever it goes. With your engine running pull this wire off and see if your electric fan goes. If so then you can do a very simple switching job on this wire to control your fan.
              OR !!
When the thermo switch on mine opens all sorts goes on.
              The fan comes on
A light on my side switch panel shows the fan is in "auto" mode, there is another lamp for "manual" !!
An audible alarm sounds.......and can be silenced
A red light on my second gauge lights up.
The overtemp alarm as a test function too.

Once the switch closes again the system resets.

I can also turn the fan on and off as I choose and this is done with momentary action switches and latching relays so that the system is at "normal" on start up.

I have recently fitted a new function that allows me to override the system momentarily during start-up as at times after a brief stop when I go to start it the fan kicks in as soon as the ignition is on. As I want all my power going to the starter I can hold down a button and the fan controller thinks the t-switch is shut, as soon as I release it the system goes live again.
I have done a similar thing to my glow plugs too.

PM me with your e-mail addy and I'll send you a pile of wiring diagrams and descriptions. Then you will see why I say my dash looks like an aircraft cockpit.

                    head

Head replaced at 52000 miles, turbo at 60000 miles. I have a feeling that it is the usage rather than the mileage that affects the pre-modified head. In Japan they rarely get used hard, once in the UK and put on the motorway at 80 mph they crack due to the poor design of the original waterways.

                        A 2.4 doing 90mph.........THAT I'd pay to see.
Even though we have some long straights round here and I can assure you that with 31's and a 2'' lift the last thing I'd be trying is land speed records.

Too right though, ''showing how fast it would go'' is a recipe for disaster.
Good thing it wasn't yours anymore.

                          Surf 2.4 1992 J

Can anybody help ? i have a 1992 2.4 surf, i have had it for 4 months, it has covered 100,000 k, a couple of weeks ago i went to cornwall in it (covered 1500k) i drove it hard and had no probs. this weekend i went on away and after 100 miles the temperature gauge went up in the red and overheated, i did not cook it, i had been doing between 70-85 mph. the AA came and put water in and it was ok (it was checked before setting out). i did a further 100 miles, and used it the next day it was fine. i then drove home at 70 mph (200 miles) and had no problems and it used no water. the only difference on the journey when it overheated was it a very hot day (30 degrees) i had 4 passengers and i had just fitted new spots on the A bar. i have been back a few days and no problems and no water loss. i am confused i thought the head had gone but i have no symptoms, it runs perfect no water loss. any ideas ? could it be a combination of a very hot day, and full load,

                          help

                          paul
                          it's a blue 2.4 litre diesel monster

yes , i hear the japs car handling skills and highway driving is different to ours ,, i am wondering however '' do the japs suffer from head cracks '' or is it on import to the uk ,,'' lets face it modified head or not these beasts are mostly above 12 years old before they crack '' still some beating by my standards '' any views on this one
if at first you dont succeed..... bollock
