  • Head probs year and mileage

All of us 2.4 owners who may have the cracked head lurgy, perhaps we should post on here what mileage their surf "MAY" have done, I say "MAY" only because an imported car could have been wound back, but lets just go on what your gut feeling about the mileage on you 2.4

Mine has done (on the clock) 76000 kilometers and the overall look of the car, it could be true, I don't think the head has been changed as there are no visible marks to say it has been, but does say on the rocker cover in black marker pen, 5.8 and 6.4 what these my be I don't know.

Mine is a 1992 I have not changed the cooling fluid as yet, or the thermostat or even the rad cap, I have then all sitting here in my garage, but do go on the assumption of "don't mess with summat that is running fine" like mine is, I have changed the oil/filter and fuel filter as these items do need changing.
I know that the head problem only effects some of the early models and it would be nice if all surf 2.4 owners added to this topic, their year/mileage etc then we perhaps could gather a bit more info on this terrible disease that plagues "SOME" 2.4 owners.

Bought '91 2.4 SSR in Dec' 2002 with 169,000km on clock.

Now that I know more than I did back then, the 2LTE engine has been changed for whatever reason to a 2LT. Now has 174,000km on clock. On my rocker cover I have *GOOD* written in red marker... lets hope so! I still have the 2LTE ECU coz I saw it t'other day !!!

      Mileage

I have a 1992 2.4td and it had 82000 km on the clock. Since it was converted to miles I have done 2000 miles, so I guess we're looking at mid 50,000 miles.

It seems that the head was changed on mine (at a cost of £1900) in July of this year, a couple of months after it was imported.

      Hope this helps

i got a 92 2.4td with a recorded milage of 118,000 km the car seems to bear up with that sort of milage as in wear and tear , flushed coolant when i bought it about 3 months ago but i have just taken the head off due to pumping out water ( see my other thread "head ache" ) guess what cracked between valves on 2,3,4
        hope this helps

I have a 1993 (July) 2.4 TDI (LTE engine). When I got it it had an indicated 61K Kms, It ran for a year doing around 25K Kms then the head went. It had had the timing belt changed as soon as I got it, 2 good coolant flushes, new oil, filter etc at 65K kms and 75K kms and was just due another (a bit late actually). I had removed the EGR valve piping at 70K kms.

I am pretty sure that the head was gone from when I got it. I am not sure on the real mileage, the condition of the car - carpets, pedal rubbers, dash, steering wheel and switches would tend to indicate that it was pretty low mileage unless they had been replaced.

When mine finally gave up it had 6 cracks in the head - between the inlets and exhaust valves on all 4 cylinders plus between the main crack and the precombustion chambers on 1 & 4. The overall condition of the head and block (apart from the head cracks) was good with machining marks still showing in the bores and the piston tops being pretty clean with no evidence of cavitation damage.

          Cheers

Something I picked up on the Aussie site while ago, is , if your timing belt light doesn't come on when your clock reaches the 100,000 mark then your car has been clocked. If it comes on with any other reading, round it up to the next 100,000. Worn rubbers and switches can easily be changed. My brake pedal has worn more in the last 18 months than in the previous 10 years. I've got heavy feet or the Japs drive in slippers??
Surely the Japs would want to make friends with us by exporting all their low mileage used cars to us, and keeping the botched high milers for themselves........wouldn't they???

funny you should mention 6.4, i have a sticker with japanese writing and 6/4 written on it in black felt pen stuck on the inside of the fuel filler flap.

Got mine a while ago now, 93 LN130 2.4 with 178,000kms on clock which seems about right for the general condition. about a 1000 miles later " head gone" I was expecting it as i was loosing water and doing 140ish kph everywhere, i have a very heavy right foot and Surfs are sooo! good on the motorway.
                How much!

                    Hi Marky

Have you had to replace your head as yet, I'm wondering if these cracks in the head start to appear, roughly about 50 to 70 thousand miles on the engine, and also wondering if the new type heads that they replace them with will be roughly the same, does anyone know what the new design heads look like compared with the old ones.

Yep they look exactly the same, the modification is an internal one on the waterways.

mmmm that fuel thought is good!

Yes you could be right about the UK fuel, it's strange the heads go not long after coming over into English shores.

And the bog brother reply, how do we really know that it is a modded head, perhaps they are built to last to a certain mileage, these Japs are really clever ya know.

just started to put mine back together , i dunno about them being clever i think they are just a bit masacistic , anyone bigger than a 8 yr old has to have arms like a contortionist to get to things but still its fun to be tinkering
