  • EGR Mod - continued!

    Hello,

Having recently done the EGR mod, with a view to getting more power out of the engine, here's an update.

Just towed the horse box with two large ponies up to Builth Wells, about 100 miles and the odd Welsh hill.

Box = 1000kg, ponies = @900 kg, other equipment = @200 kg, so a good 2000kg towing (plus @2000 kg of Surf and peoples).

On the hills didn't notice that much difference. On the flatter parts (really, there are one or two around here) the truck seemed to be much more willing to get into the sweet spot the engine seems to have (@2,500 rpm, 60mph, below this it struggles).

So, my conclusion - EGR staying disconnected for the time being.

Thanks to Mr. Bushwacker for the advice.

    Regards

    EGR Mod Question

I recently had problems with black smoke, no power and my Surf running in 'safe' mode, which was causing me no end of worry. I decided to check the usual suspects.. cleaned and replaced the air filter, checked all of the hoses around the turbo etc.. with no effect. Then I decided to do the EGR mod with a cable tie.

When I removed the hose from the EGR, I found that it already had a ball bearing in the hose (probably from a previous owner) - so that meant I wouldn't get any advantage from the cable tie. I decided to replace the piece of hose, and start my diagnosis again, with the EGR connected, so basically a stock surf.

Everything ran fine, including the turbo light, which had been intermittent at best?

The question is.. what else could have been wrong.. if the EGR mod caused so many problems. Has anyone else encountered this?

No, just because you reconnected the EGR and other stuff works I would say you got more trouble than that.
All the EGR does is open and close and allows already burnt exhaust gases back in to the engine, this is controlled by the vaccuum pipe. Also controlled by vaccuum is the turbo 4wd system etc so if reconnecting your EGR solved other troubles then I would say you got vaccuum pipes connected wrongly somewhere along the line.

Dear Mr Bushwacker and Mr Lovely Boyo

The Egr mod was succesfully implemented this weekend and it does improve the performance, albeit I have no idea on the economy just yet.

Thanks for the tip chaps, watch this space for any further developments
