  • Wont start *Im at work URGENT help!*

    2.4TD started fine this morning.

This afternoon I turned the key and it took a few turns before it started

Now - turn the key, engine turns but its not even attempting to fire up!

HELP - I need to get home.

Glowplug light acts as it has since I got it. Stays on for 2 seconds, goes out.

    HELP!

In the meantime ... I have been outside after reading forum messages and found that the 80amp glowplug fuse has blown.

So - 6pm friday night - where do I get another one from?

Any thoughts as to why its blown.

    Cheers

Failing that - anyway to start it with a blown fuse?

      Cheers

Cant you get a jump start to get you home. Then try your nearest TOYOTA dealer in the morning. It will still start after a few good turns without the glow plugs once warm it will be fine. You can jump it off either of the 2 batteries if you have 2 that is.

Answer: Bridge the fuse for 10 seconds, simple as that, car starts and off we go.

It wasnt having any of it with just turning the key continuously.

When mine blew a dealer was the only place to get one, have fun fitting it, its bolted in from underneath.
Unbolt black box that houses the fuse, turn it over, remove bottom cover and undo both bolts that hold the fuse in. Be careful as one side is live so use caution or disable batteries.
Say not always what you know, but always know what you say.

If you have a breakers yard near you then you'll find lots of them in diesel toys

Milners and Roughtrax list the 80A fuse if you can wait for delivery.

Bought one regular motor factors shop £4.99.

Toyota dealer wanted to order them in at £6 + VAT.
                    No Surfs in scrapyards.
Finally tried a motor factors a mile away and they had 20amp, 70amp, 80amp and 100amp of this type of fuse off the shelf.

Fitting it was awkward, but relatively easy although I do have 3 scorch marks on the socket where the end touched metal......

It was like bonfire night at one point.

The easy way to change the fuse

When you have unbolted the fuse box, tip it forward towards the front of the car. If you look down into the fusebox from the top, you can see a little slot next to the fuse. This is a clip you can disengage with a flat-bladed screwdriver and then the fuseholder will slide out of the bottom of the fusebox giving easy access to the bolts holding the fuse in. I have heard that people have done it with the fuse holder in situ in the fusebox, but that is just a nightmare that is so easy to avoid.

Ay, managed that one - cheers.

Got in the car this morning and the bl00dy fuse HAS BLOWN AGAIN!

Any suggestions why all of a sudden it keeps blowing?

I take it the only time current is run through the fuse is for 10 seconds before start up? Whilst the car is running no current runs through it as its not needed??

The first thing to do is to check the spacers on the mounting stud that holds the bus bar taking the power to the glow plugs and the electrical connection to it.

The order, from the bottom, should be Blue spacer, bus bar, power connection, black spacer, washer, nut.

If the bar or the power connection is touching the post, the fuse will blow.

If that is all in order then I'm afraid you need help from an auto electrician to find where the short (which is the most likely cause) is.

One thought, the "bolt in" fuses come in various strengths, you did put an 80 amp one in?

In my car it seemed to be starting fine for months but then got worse so I changed the glow plugs, it was only then that I discovered that the spacers were wrongly assembled before I had the car, and power was running to earth at the post. As the fuse was blown,I have no idea why it had ever seemed to start well in the cold!
