  • Darn, everything was going so well....

....but I've had to stop rebuilding my Surf because I don't know which way around the tiny half-moon oilseal at the back of the camshaft fits - should the flange be inside or outside? Inside 'feels' right, but I suspect it's outside as otherwise the face or the half-moon would be very close to the camshaft end.

Also, to fix it in I've got a tube of HYLOMAR UNIVERSAL BLUE Gasket and Jointing compound - the box lists cylinder heads as a usage and temps up to 250C - is this OK to use?

Finally, the workshop manual says to put PACKING around the front and rear upper surface of the head under the camcover rubber gasket(just in the 4 small areas on either side of the camshaft where the ali components meet). The other workshop manual says to use sealant in these areas. Would 4 blobs of this HYLOMAR be OK for this purpose also?

    thanks very much
    James

Anyone know if this Hylomar Universal Blue is OK for fixing the half-moon back in?

whats the point of the half moon bit? I've not much experience with camcovers but the surf one and the one on my VW both have them, rubber one on VW.

I got them on the Lotus . they are from line boring the camshaft journals as the milling tool needs to clear the head . Therefore they put the half moons in as a blacking bit .

Never used any sealant of any kind when replacing my head, on the half moon or the head gasket its self.

really? what's stopping the halfmoon dropping out the back of the engine? When I removed mine from the old head it was held in with some thick grey flexible sealant stuff.

Wouldn't use Hylomar on anything, I've seen some horrors where excess hylomar has broken away and blocked oil pick ups on bikes. If you want to use a sealant use silicone.

Should be in the oposite way to the one in JimL's picture, flange goes on the inside, it's stopped being pushed in by the end of the camshaft and being pushed out by the flange. Sealant is fine but not really required.

                  Cheers

Sorry bout that Jim, if lucky is right then mine was put in wrong years ago coz I didnt touch it, didnt even notice it till you wanted the info. Either way it didnt leak oil, and it did have a white/grey sealant on it.

thanks for your help. i've fitted it with the flange facing inwards with regular silicone sealant.
