  • Ref HiLux runs out of steam

    Hi Guys & Girls,
A couple of weeks ago I posted a thread complaining that my HiLux pick-up stopped after about 20 miles. Well I've changed the fuel filter and unfortunately it still stops. This only seems to happen when the tank is less than half full. When I removed the old filter (of unknown vintage) in the bottom was what I can only describe as brown pond weed, a sort of slimey, clingy film. Is it posible that there is more of this S**t in the fuel tank and as the level drops it starts clinging to the pickup pipe? If so is there any way of getting it out? I would appreciate your suggestions.

If the gung was in the filter it might also have got through to the injectors. Try some injector cleaner first (cheaper option). Then if it's still happening you might need the tank dropped and cleaned and the fuel lines blown/cleaned through.

Is the breather clear, when it stops remove filler cap and see if it gives a big sigh of relief.

I havent done it but just like any job on these things - you can lie under it for an hour looking at it and thinking ooooh havent done anything like that before or you can slap yourself upside the head (kinda hehe) and get to it: take the bash cover off and disco whatever it is and get the tank out and clean the phucker. Face it - a hilux that stops after 20 mls is worth less than a bicycle so go for it , you cant loose.

(Its late and Ive been greyhound racing )

Koi, where is the breather for the tank?

              Congratulations

You have a fungus growing in your tank. You can read all about it here: http://www.fuelcare.com/contamination.htm Water in the fuel is the main problem. One trucker I know dumps a pint or so of rubbing alcohol in the tank; alcohol is hydroscopic (absorbs water), as well as very poisonous. Might even kill the fungus... Get your tank flushed and fuel lines blown out with compressed air at least as far as the filter.
