  • Engine completely knackered. Turbo problem?

    Boy, have I got problems.

Last thurs, out of the blue, engine started clattering and swiftly seized. The garage say there was no oil at all in the engine but could see no signs of where it had all gone! In any case they say the engine is now completely shot.

Another engine specialist in Cardiff says they have seen this before and it is the turbo that blew and pumped all the oil out of the engine. Is this a common occurence and is there any preventative measures/maintenance that can be done to avoid it?

Incidently, have been quoted £785 (including VAT, delivered) for a complete replacement 2.4 turbo engine including all ancilleries (turbo, alternater, starter etc) and a local mechanic reckons £250 - £350 to fit. Sound reasonable?

It sounds like a bargain to me . I was quoted a lot more than that for replacement engines ( hence the conversion )
Is there any warranty with that ??

Just 60 days, long enough to find out if it comes with any faults I guess.

Wheres the engine from, is it recon, what about the head has it been stitched, repaired or is it still the original.
You sure its not an engine out a hilux, sorry to be sceptical but with all the bits & bobs it just seems a very low price.

I'm told it comes out of a rolled surf and has done about 41K kilometers. I put my request on the 24/7 spares website and have had about 5 replies from various breakers, the most expensive I have been quoted is around £900 delivered including VAT. Obviously I would rather have a nice reconditioned short engine with a new head as Stevo supplies, but that is over £2300 fitted once you include the VAT and to put that into perspective, my annual salary is only £10k! The other thing is that even if I had a recon engine, I would still have to source a turbo as it is that going and sucking the oil out of the engine that caused the problem in the first place.

That brings up another question. If a diesel engine has been tipped over don't you have to have the head taken off because the oil gets in and it can't be started again till this is cleaned out ???.

            Anyone know about this ???.

I really don't know the answer to that, but the seller says they have a test bed they run the engines on to check them before being offered for sale.

                part needed

Hiya, i dont think you will have to take the head off it should be fine providing it hasnt been left running upside down, i.e driver knocked out. Anyway i was wondering if you have got the old engine out yet as i need a flywheel for my 2.4 surf...... I have cash waiting and i am desperate for this part. I will look forward to your reply.

I noticed that you have a manual surf and the other engine is an auto, so dont think that it would be any use to you.

                      Happy ending - so far.

Well, the second-hand engine turned up, 2 days later than promised. All fitted now and, touch wood, all seems tickety boo.

There is a strange burning oil sort of smell at the moment but there is no smoke and the oil level isn't dropping. Is it possible that before the old engine seized, the oil that was left got hot enough to boil/vapourise and so got past piston rings and has coated the inside of the exhaust/manifold, producing this smell?

(Shamefaced admission, seems the turbo was fine but I hadn't had the oil changed on schedule, plus hadn't checked it for a while and it must have been burning or losing a bit and the level just got too low.....)

Still, engine delivered for £785 inc VAT and my mechanic charged £450 for changing engine, new oil, filter, changing gearbox oil which seems pretty reasonable.

Still a high price to pay for not doing regular checks on the oil though!

                          don't ignore oil leaks!

I paid the price on my merc last year - spotted an oil leak from the diff, just a few spots on the drive... made a note to fix it, never did. then one day the diff exploded with an £800 bill..... All because i ignored a drip.....

Picking up my new 2.4 today... cant wait...
