Well, I have 2 workshop manuals - the UK haynes manual for the 4runner and a US one - both have relevant bits. I've just bought a manual specific to the engine which seems much more useful.

re. the head removal - one exhaust manifold bolt is rusted solid and trying to get at the inlet manifold bolts is impossible, so we had to hoist the head off with the inlet and exhaust manifolds still attached, which wasn't too bad in the end (with a full size engine hoist).

I've removed the rad, the aircon rad, the thermostat, turbo and throttle body. In fact, not much is left behind at all. Apparently you can remove the head leaving both manifolds and the turbo in place in the engine bay, but this requires that a)you can get the bolts off and b) you know what you're doing!

I've ditched the aircon system as the pump was making a terrible sound, so that's one less rad and pump, and a bit less plumbing to go back on.

The best advice I can give (although I've built a kit-car I'm a novice at engine work) is to document everything - we've made a complete photo record of the removal, showing closeups of each piece or pipe removed, what fasteners came off and where it connected to - I think we have 50 to 100 photos so far. Hopefully re-assembly with the new head should be aided by this reference.

Second best advice is to ask specific questions to Stevo and Marky as they are both excellent sources of help.
