  • Talk to me about winches.

So I am thinking at some point I will need to add a bumper and winch to the truck. I can see plenty on ebay but some knowledge and experience would be great beforehand. Its not for right now, though the pull is strong. I just want to know what is a good one and what is a bad one, say within the 200-300 mark.

Seems to be a couple of brands. Wichmax and rhino stand out. Any usage in the real world and what a person should look out for would be much appreciated.

I know very little about them, but you usually see some around halloween
Sorry Lewd Lex Lover, I am sure someone with expertise will be along soon.

Heavy, expensive, you'll never use it. Warn are the best.

just a few questions to ask yourself

are you going off roading regularly and is it extreme

do you want to spend about £600 on a winch and a winch bumper

do you keep the truck in a garage or on the road as you will need to remove the winch everytime it is left in public or you will come back with no winch or a truck sliced in half long ways.

if it yes to all get one if not dont bother, they may look good but nothing a good tow rope or turfer cant sort out at a fraction of the cost!

Cheers guys. It would be a working tool for the most part. Something to use to pull out logs and such on a small holding or whatever seems to come to mind. Not so much the recreational styles just yet.

The security front is not one I had given full thought to. Hmmm.

                  Get you winch plated in
Covered so prying eyes can't see it or get to it
Or make it hard for them to get to
                  or
get a winch that fits on a tow hitch.
When you don't need it take it off and stick it in the boot.
                  Simples.

A bit more than what you want to spend but more to show you another option.

                    I see, I see!
That is a great idea. I think the removable tow hitch one is a winner though seeing some chav struggle with a 5mm steel shroud over the winch would be funny but him not knowing it was there in the first place is great.

To be fair the goodwinch one negates the need for a winch bumper so comes in cheaper than the other option combined.

                    Thanks for that. Great info.

A winch that mounts to a tow ball on a possibly weak tow bar?

                      Scary stuff.

                      Nev.

Nah not really Nev the OP doesn't want a winch for lugging 2tonne truck stuck axle deep in thick sticky mud just wants one for pulling ogs around a yard.

Yeah I doubt I will be that muddy just for want of finding it in my area. Lots of countryside but little lanes to be had so far. It would be for work and such.

What does a winch attach to? The bumper or the chassis? Is there much difference between the two (bumper or hitch mount) or is it about angular strength?
