  • Bit of a cheeky question but here goes

    I'm thinking of buying a Landcruiser 80 Series 4.2TD.

Has anyone on here got experience of these and any potential problems with them that I should look at. I've heard that some of the early 4.2 TD - I think the 1HD-FT engine has a problem with big end bearings breaking up. Does anyone else know of any major problems with them.

    Cheers

I think the 1HD-FT is used from 1991 onwards, it's the 4 valve per cylinder twin overhead cam Diesel. I think from 1989 to 1991 the 1HD-T was used which is Single overhead cam 12 valve engine.

26mpg overall from the manual, 22mpg overall from the auto according to Parkers guide.

Plus you get an engine that will pull down small (or large) buildings, tow 3 1/2 tons and it has seats in it like armchairs - actually better than my armchairs at home.

Mind you if you get the 4.5 petrol, it's a whole different story for the fuel consumption - 18mpg average supposedly but more like 10 around town.

I just viewed one yesterday, 3" lift, 33" AT tyres, fridge, cooker, water containers, suede upholstery, front, rear and center diff locks, front and rear climate control, electric heated seats, electric retractable mirrors, electric sunroof etc etc etc... you get the idea, loaded is an understatement.

Mind you with the lift I'd never get it in any multi story carpark.

                Cheers

Who cares, a small price to pay, its one of the very few vehicles that could tempt me away from my Surf, the regular landcruiser isn't quite my cup of tea (far too commonplace overhere), but the VX? Very tasty indeed.

I take it that's an Amazon? The Colorado/Prado is really common over here, and I don't really like the shape anyway. But I meet a 91 Amazon in opposite directions on my commute - it's a real beaut.

Personally I think they are a far better motor (risk of being shot) than the surf. My mate has had both the older 1990 model and a new Amazon model. His old one did the engine in at 260,000 miles but he puts it down to using the wrong spec oil. New Amazon is a lot more refined but given the choice I'd take his old 90 model any day...

Yep it's the one they rebadged the Amazon in the late 90s before the current shape (100 series) came out. Like the enclosed.

It's about the only motor that I love like the Surf. It's just a bit more of a bruiser than the Surf - People could probably say something about me having a small appendage but what the heck, I like it.

Plus the engine is generally so strongly built that nothing short of a tactical nuclear weapon could break it - Mind you it's basically a truck engine and it's made by Hino (who make some really strong trucks).

Plus the interior is better than my front room so I might just move into it.

Still love the Surf though and even without a Surf (can't have both as I don't have the space) I'm not leaving the Forum or the community of Surf lovers, Not even if you all put me against the wall and try and shoot me - I ain't going, can't make me etc. etc.

                            PLUS IT'S STILL A YOTA.

                            Cheers
