Hmmm, so, rear heater pipes have been removed and silicon blanking plugs put on, and oil and filter has been changed.
the good news is,while only having done 1500-1800 miles since the last change, oil is free from any signs of contaminant,or 'fresh as a daisy' as my mechanic said.
the coolant pipes, while very corroded, where not rusted through ,as thought, and no signs of misting.
maybe its just natural loss, so hoping i get an all clear from the sniffer test on saturday (many thanks again to surfenstien)

The coolant level in the expansion tank was probably higher in the summer due to the heater being set to cold most of the time i.e valve closed on bulkhead, no circulation through the heater core.

cant see any leaks, new rad and pipes where fitted just prior to me buying her in may,and a full system flush was also done.
Was a new rad cap fited as well?
Old rad caps can sometimes release pressure into the expansion tank which in turn will eventually push excess coolant out of the overflow pipe causing the level to drop as the engine cools down.
There only really needs to be enough coolant in the expansion tank (on a cold engine) to allow the tube inside to stay submerged.

she doesn't smoke (at all) and no loss in power, and the temp gauge (for what good it is) hits mid and stays there.rad cap is clean,so is the oil cap, but did notice that the oil level is slightly higher than when it was changed 4 months ago,and quite black for oil that has only done 1500 miles.
Thats normal for these old school diesels, it's soot from burnt diesel mixing with the engine oil.

im thinking about a 'sniffer test' on the coolant, but any other advice would be appreciated .

Fit an after market temp gauge.

Right sorry chap i have a slight problem. I have found the leak testing fluid, but for the life of me i cannot find the sniffer anywhere, they were both together about 6 months ago,not something you use everyday. so i apologise i will not be able to do the sniffer test on saturday. But i will need to get another one so if you want to pop over next saturday i will be able to sort it out for you..

SCRUB THAT JUST FOUND ONE, CHEERS WOODZIE. so i can test the coolant for you saturday.

Ah coming in from Melksham eh.We do have a sarnie van that use to come round, but i haven't seen it in weeks. I normally just grab something from eddies diner on bower hill industrial estate. £3.50 for a 12" breakfast baguette, and they are to die for.
