cooling system - not losing fluid anymore, the old girl still starts ok though sometimes its a bit lumpy, could be a corroded glow plug? Certainly no white smoke (steam) just a bit of black smoke when I accelerate (which I do a lot).
I was talking yesterday to a bloke in Tool Station who has been running his van for 7 months now after using the stuff I put in, he used 2 bottles and said that I should have done the same as my engine is a 3 ltr, but we'll see what happens.
Right, it's FINALLY out of the garage two days ago, and it now drives with no issues at all. Total palaver over the last couple of months (haven't seen it since June) but after a great deal of money spent, it has now had -
-All grease points done
-New brake pads
-New oil and filter (will do again in 300 miles)
-New transmission and drivetrain oils
-New Roughtrax head
-New seals
-New head gasket and kit
-New cambelt
-New idler pulley
-New tensioner
-New water pump
-Newly recored radiator
-New rad cap
-New thermostat
-New top and bottom hoses
-New hose clips
-Fresh coolant
-New bushes
-New CV gaiters
-EGR removal
I'm probably missing some bits. There has been no expense spared whatsoever, I wanted to get it all done right, and have it run without issue for a great many years. Fingers ###### crossed.
Finally looking forward to driving it, and maybe start with some mild mods once my bank manager stops crying.

Does this bloke's van have a Surf engine/head in it??
Haha sorry, posted off my phone using the mobile site which seems to automatically resize imagery for a phone screen, no idea how big that is on a laptop.

It is quite large
Perfect if you are dual screening
I will keep a eye out for it, the number plate will jog my memory.
Always nice to wake up and find some little scrote has keyed your car over a few panels. I wasn't planning on it being a show truck or anything, but still, it's just the principle. Hope it's a one off.
missed this very long and interesting thread from a while back.
pyemaster - I bought a similarly re-built surf (however is a third gen) - recent new head, rad, thermostat, pipes and bunch of other stuff on the receipt when I got it. Within a fairly short time had all sorts of boilover and temp / white smoke issues. Hoping it wasn't another head gone I stumbled on the viscous fan threads on this forum - and sure enough when i poked a rolled up newspaper into the fan it stopped (hot engine so the visc clutch *should* have been engaged).
I replaced the fluid with 10000cst from fleabay and fitted a external water temp gauge and haven't had a temp problem since (had my share of other mechanical ones tho boohoo/haha). I have to assume my engines still in alright shape?? Fan sounds like jet engine which probably isn't great for fuel economy but temps are rock solid.
So if you've spent all that hard earned cash look at that mod, mate. Having a properly operating fan is kinda important ;-)
Tested the fan tonight, stiff to turn when cold and a doddle to spin when hot. Argh!
Now it hasn't been overheating at all since the work has been done, but the temp gauge had risen above halfway twice after long, steep climbs... Could this be a factor do you think? I was under the impression it didn't have much effect on cooling over 40mph?
Sorry for the newb question but is it easy to check the fan oil level / replace the oil?
