For the love of god. One last time:

    - 2.4s often leak oil from the rocker cover (aka valve cover). Once it's out it will spill all over the place and create all sorts of apparent problems by smoking everytime it touches something hot. The crankshaft seals often leak too.

Grassman already told you to have a look at that. I already told you to have a look at that. You seem to be ignoring us.

    - Once you have the oil leaks fixed, IF your oil level is actually going down, you may have engine issues. If it's going down very slowly, I wouldn't worry, just top it up. It's an old engine in a vehicle that is worth about the same with no engine as it is with one, so just keep going and let it die one day

If the level is going down fast, get a compression test done.

Do not start taking an engine out to try and work out what's wrong. It's a lot easier to do that when it's in a vehicle and running.

All you have to do to find the oil leak is steam clean the engine and then leave it running for a while until you spot oil dribbling out.

Hi, and thanks for the advice. I have spoken with the mechanic again, who is also gettng rather ####ed off with me! ha. He says that there is no point doing a compression test as it will read something like 30-35. He said if I want to waste my money on it, then thats up to me but im an idiot.. The thing is, he is speaking dirrectly with my girlfriend who is Estonia, with her trying to translate engine talk to me. To start with, what should the compression read?!

With regards to your comment about oil leaking from the rocker cover or crankshaft. Can I ask a silly question? I see that the burnt oil is coming through the breather pipe on the engine block. It is not coming from anywhere else. So if I understand you correctly, both of the gaskets which you have mentioned could be worn and thus, allow oil to burn and come out of this breather pipe??

The reason that it may have seemed I was ignoring you (although I wasnt) was that I assumed if these said gaskets leaked, the oil would be burning on the exterior of the engine - when the oil passed through the gasket from insdie the engine, and then burnt when it touched the exterior of the engine which was hot. Am I understanding correctly?

And if anyone is interested, here is a short clip I just made of the burning oil coming from the breather pipe. The surf has only been ideling for about 10minutes.

        http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j-rADSq7Ao4

It was a lot thicker the other day when I drove to mechanics and he pulled the pipe off, but now that it is freezing outside, Im not inclined to drive it as I need windows open as not to poison myself with the fumes...!

I susspect that it was thicker as the pressure had built up in the block, whereas now, its just gently puffing out. It was REALLY thick when he took the pipe off.

I guess I should just fix the pipe back on correctly, as the verdict on here was that it made no difference.

thanks for giving a shit people! I owe you...

That's got nothing to do with cam cover gaskets....head/gasket or rings/bores....compression test.

With the communication trouble you have I'd really suggest you learn to do it yourself...cheaper to buy the tools than pay the mechanic.

..and what he "thinks" it will read is not the same as "knowing" what it reads...I think he's and *****. I'm annoyed now, time for tea lol.

Can you PLEASE explain the obsession with having this pipe pulled off?
