I've found the search function on forums to be annoyingly shite.

Say for example you have an engine problem, it could be a number of things that are causing it. Its a good way of solving it by explaining the symptoms and having people who are more knowledgeable about mechanics to help you by suggesting what they think is the culprit and what to try next.

I'm sure similar threads may have been started in the past, but if that's the case then you might as well lock the forum and treat it like a book on a shelf as opposed to the live dynamic community that it is.

In my quest to get my surf starting better, a forum member who is breaking a surf has made a little money from me, which in turn makes it likely he will subscribe, I also will probably subscribe due to the fact the forum and forum members have helped me find a solution to the problem.

I will then post pictures, mods and other things I think people will find useful and interesting. All this leads to a thriving forum.

The other alternative is to reply "use the search function" to every query and make newbies feel like its a 'them and us" forum. I've used the search function, and google, but sometimes its nice to have a discussion and get some views and opinions about an issue.

Rant over, cup of tea time.
    If I like it, Bushwhacker doesn't. :-)

I'll be honest, it was aimed more at the original thread, not your video.

Use the search function on here or Google. If you use Google, as most of you seem to have no idea what or where the search button is, type in '4Runner' instead of 'Surf' and you'll get a lot more search results.
A 4Runner is the same vehicle as a Surf except the steering wheel is on the wrong side and they sometimes have a petrol engine in them.

NB: If you must use one of those poxy iPhones to type anything on here, download one of the many Grammar Apps. first.

          Thank you.

p.s. You've probably got a text or five that needs a reply, sorry to keep you.
Gosh glad I missed out on the age thing ....
Grammar may not be the problem Vince, reading it maybe...
          Amen to that ..

            I wholeheartedly agree with this.

Also we're not all youngsters, just people that have bought Surfs and need a little help from more experienced owners. By asking questions here, albeit questions that may have been asked before, I've learnt far more than I ever could from a manual.

So, keep up the good work you 'old hands', answer the questions we ask and keep the sarcasm for the appropriate time ie after the query has been answered.

I'd agree with the previous post BUT ...

always remember that 'General' ISN'T the place to post technical queries - there are specific areas for that and while it may be necessary to post in general in order to highlight a technical issue it's advisable to just post a link to the real query so that the technical gurus can have a look and help.

To put it more clearly - 'General' is just the childrens playground

                  Nice carrot Gra,
the search buttons ok but many a time it dont throw up what your looking for so then i'll ask,
what annoys me more though is when you take the trouble to answer a question and the c#### cant even be bothered to come back with a quick thanks, text talk is also annoying! and people with ginger hair, and people who say "for my sins", and people who wear those pants with the crutch down by their knees, and people who say "yeah" every other word, and overweight women in tight leggings, in fact every fecker annoys me in one way or another

I feel a bit guilty because I both fit into that age range and have definately been taking up more than my fair share of people's times with questions.

I think the problem I found was not that the search system wasn't that good (it's not the best, it's not the worst) but that most of the time I wasn't sure _what_ to search for - both in terms of how certain parts have different names for the same part (because of the mixture of nationalities I suspect) but also how different models have different names but In some cases exactly the same solution or in others wildly different.

Still...in an attempt at putting something back into the forum I started putting this together a 'duffers guide' to modifications and a large collection of links to other sites/threads that might answer specific questions..

It's only a very loose skeleton...but it's going to be put together in a way that *ahem* us youngsters might connect with

A good idea, however you will need to ensure utmost accuracy or you will be left to the wolves.
For instance, in the lift/suspension area of your document you mention longer suspension to give more ground clearance. This will only give you more available suspension movement unless it is coupled with bigger diameter wheels or tyres the rear axle will still and always be at the same height from the ground regardless of suspension lift.
Yes I will agree it is and could be seen as nit picking but even with a 6 inch suspension lift the rear axle is still the same distance from the ground.

Good point. I think the theory behind the doc will be to act as a 'pointer' to the correct threads and sites rather than getting _too_ bogged down in the technical detail - but I get what you mean as there's no point in it being laden with inaccuracies from the start!

One I get it to a fit enough state I'll start putting drafts out there to chew apart the language a bit - I'm a writer rather than an engineer (in real life I mean) but I figured putting together a document that answers the core repeated questions wouldn't be a bad thing in the long run

edit : only time will tell if i'm terribly terribly wrong though!

                                Totally agree.

                                The problem that searching for information brings up is along the lines of;
Try to search for the info
Succeed in tracing down the links
                                Navigate to links
                                Links dead or removed.
                                Get disheartened
                                Post query here
                                Directed to dead links.

                                The cycle continues.

Steep learning curve coupled with grazed knuckles with ensue.
