Close the window or side exit.

    Happens to most.
well, that was a bad idea!

Open the sunroof a little as well if you have one, or open the two rear passenger windows a couple of inches.

I get this on my 3rd gen. I tried putting one of those exhaust tips that you see on a lot of "modified" cars on, but it didn't make any difference. (http://www.ebay.ie/itm/Chrome-exhaus...item3cd0688733)

My idea was to move the end of the exhaust further from the window, or use the angled end to push fumes away.

My mechanic reckons that what I'd need to do is change the shape of the back by adding a spoiler or something similar.

My last 3rd gen didn't have a door fitted spare, but this one has; they both had the same problem with fumes.

Yep, as the car moves forward a bit of a vacuum is created, so the fumes are sucked in. If you " pressurise" the cabin using the sunroof or opening the side windows a bit the vacuum will go and the fumes won't come in, which will make your dog a lot happier!
Same problems occurs sometimes with pick-ups fitted with a canopy. On sandy roads the load bay fills up with dust. If you pressurise the load bay by slightly opening the front flap of the canopy the muck stays out (kalahari driving tip n. 322!).
          Good luck

                    How is this vacuum created?

You'll need to swap to a more refined vehicle to avoid the tractor issues.

It's more a low pressure area rather than a vacuum.

Run it on wvo, then you can sniff the fumes as much as you like and still not die!

Agreed. High pressure flows to low pressure. Which is why the air will rush out of a football when you stick a knife in it. As your car moves through the air, the air is being pushed out the way causing an area of low pressure behind the car. That void needs to be filled again so air gets "sucked" round the back of the car. Air behaves like a liquid. Think of the effect a rock has in a flowing stream. Your car is the rock, the air is like the water. And it's much more pronounced with cars that have a flat rear end. Like a Surf. Anyway, physics lesson over; I'm boring myself (and others, probably....)
