Have you been to far NW of Scotland? Similar amount of nothingness to the Lake District and less busy. The fishing is also better if that is a consideration!

Further north is even better IMO. Head for Ullapool and keep going, there's a nice campsite north of Lochinver next to a beach. Just check the wind forecast before you pitch up as it can get pretty wild if you're unlucky.

We went up to Ullapool when we were there, but no further north.

I'll have a look into the camping up there - thanks.
