So as long as I connect it to a battery producing 1A I'll be good for ever ?
TBH My fridge uses 7 amps but is only running for 15% of the time. It is easier for me to say it runs at 1A per hour.
Funny - my electric bill charges in kwh but I can't talk about consumption in kwh ?? - ie there is a measurement called 'Amp hour' and it is quite important when working off a finite reserve of amps..
If the fridge only averages 1A consumption then a 40W panel should give you the extra running time you're after dependent on weather and daylight hours. A 40W panel shouldn't cost the earth these days and will be a damned sight lighter than another battery but you'll also need a small regulator to avoid frying your battery
PS
There's plenty of UK sites with mains hookup these days but doubtless they won't be as cheap as the rest of Europe

Thanks Bob - Will look into a 60w panel on the basis that it will be flat on the roof rack so not perfectly set up.
And there's you, stickler for engineering accuracy, having a go at me for pointing out engineering nonsense. Fine. Yes, your charger will do whatever you want it to do, in Marigolds per square foot, flux per mile, whatever.
A/h - measure of capacity.
A - measure of current flow - instantaneous, no time involved.
h - measure of time - seemingly to feel longer than normal here.
I've been camping for the last 20 years and I tend to favour the small ,lacking facilities sites in the uk.
I spent 22 years 'camping' while working for Auntie Liz and the most significant thing I learnt was that any fool can rough it
As a result I have a tin tent with hot and cold running water, gas and/or electric heating, cooker, fridge freezer, shower, double bed, Radio, DVD, TV and loads of other stuff !
The beauty of it is that if I venture off mains I still have all the facilities available

I think I'm getting close to the age where a caravan starts looking a better option, although I'm hardly 'roughing it' these days. Alsace last August:
Well, apologies to all
It is not my fault if you lot can't understand what I am trying to say
So I will try again.
If your battery(ies) is/are in good condition then the plug in solar charger will be a good idea, yes it will help to trickle charge the battery(ies).
However if you need a bump start every time to start the truck then you will need more than a trickle charger.
Have you been to far NW of Scotland? Similar amount of nothingness to the Lake District and less busy. The fishing is also better if that is a consideration!
