  • diff lock light

    hi just a quick one

I now know more about the 4wd gears, and i am aware that i can put it into 4wd just by pressing the 4WD button with it in H4/H2, thing is if i just press the button should just 4 green lights show on the display ? Because when i do press it all green lights and the orange light also comes on.
i thought the orange light was for diff lock, and for normal 4x4 it shouldnt come on

    3rd Gen: The 3rd Gen Surf has a multi-mode 4wd system.
It may be used in 2wd Hi-ratio, driven by the rear wheels only, 4wd Hi-ratio with an open centre differential. 4wd Hi-ratio with the centre differential locked and 4wd Lo-Ratio with the centre differential locked.

H2: Rear wheel drive only: Normal operation, best for less wear & tear on components, best fuel economy & performance.
H4: 4 wheels driven, open centre differential: Press red button on side of 4wd selector. 4 wheel Indicator will illuminate in centre of dash when fully engaged. You may select/deselect this mode at speeds up to 100Kph. May be used anytime extra traction is desired
H4L: 4 wheels driven, centre differential locked: Move 4wd-selector lever fully back (position of button on side not important), 4 wheel Indicator and centre diff light will illuminate in centre of dash when fully engaged. You may select/deselect this mode at speeds up to 5Kph. Must only be used on loose surfaces such as mud, snow etc.
L4L: 4 wheels driven, centre differential locked, Lo-Ratio engaged: 4 wheel Indicator and centre diff light will illuminate in centre of dash when fully engaged. Select neutral on main gearbox, move 4wd selector-lever fully back, push to the right and then forwards.

        orange light

        Hi,
I think that, like I was, you are wondering why the orange light, indicating the centre diff, comes on when you press the button. If you keep driving, you will see that it will stop flashing and eventually it will go off, indicating that you are in H4. The thing is that sometimes it can take a while, like you might have to drive for a few seconds/few hundred meters before that happens and 4x4 engages.Other times it engages almost straight away. Try it out...
        Cheers

It's busted then, flashing is 'confused' mode, and something's not right.

                  re 4wd confused mode

carried out search and came across this post

Hi lads. First post from downunder (NZ)

I recently bought a 95 Hilux Surf KZN185 and I've had some frustrating problems with 4WD not engaging.

From the beginnig it just wouldn't go into any 4WD mode and no matter what I did, the 4WD dash lights would just flash. At first I thought it was the transfer case motor so took that off, stripped it and test it - fine. So figured it must be electrical.

Tested a spare 4WD ECU and same problem. Followed all the wires and sensors and found that when I disconnected transfer indicator switches 2 & 4 located on the top of the transfer case, presto, it works! All 4WD modes work and the dash lights indicate as normal.

However I would of thought that under normal circumstances disconnecting sensors would stop 4WD working.

I'm now confused. Should I just leave it as is and not worry about the having these 2 sensors unplugged?

                  Cheers
                  Finn

Check all the vacuum lines to the front axle first, then try and work out if the front prop is locked or free when you press the button, or if its the ADD on the front axle that is not working, either will cause the lights to flash.

There are lots of switches on the T/case and one on front axle that can be checked, often one has corroded and not telling the ECU when something is in the right place.

It can also be the ECU itself, or the 4WD actuator on the back of the T/Case, whatever you do don't take the big cover off the actuator untill you are sure everything else is fine, as they are a nightmare to put back together and get the timing right as they can ping apart when you take the cover off no matter how careful you are.

Find out what part isn't working first, and logically go from there.

It's logic that needs to be discovered first!

Sometimes my 4wd won't engage striaght away, so I give it 30 seconds of driving, and if the orange light is still flashing, click it out on the gearlever side button, and then back in. Usually works. I googled the same issue when I was new to the truck, it's a common issue.

You can also try dropping it into N and then putting it back into D while moving, give it some gas, also known to make the orange flashing light go out.

I find that the more I use it, the quicker it engages. It's been raining for ages here so been on for a week.
