the earth wire that was causing a problem and the one that is the earth for all the pump sensors is located around the back of the block and goes to the bulkhead above the bellhousing, it's not easy to spot but a corroded earth could be the issue.
My truck would run perfectly and then just die for no reason (you can read it all in the thread)

I had a 3.0 2nd gen auto. Not sure if it's the same on a 2.4 but well worth a look.

The other wires were the coolant sensor and the other sensor wires in pump.
Spark found they were damaged and replaced.

I think it was easier to spot the earth from the turbo side, down behind the EGR pipe, perhaps look up from underneath.

The earth isn't there atall. Such a pig. I struggle with electronics. Really dont know where to turn now. Liike said I know fuel is reaching the pump but not getting through is. And I can think that the only thing stopping it is the scv, but if im getting power to it with the ignition on surely its that at fault?

Sodding nightmare, do I change. The pump and hope its not 600 odd wasted or do I keep at the electrics side of it and hope. Mabye I need to get an electrician in at the end of the month to see if they can sort it.
well, that was a bad idea!

how do i test the TPS? i have an understanding that the ECU gets signals from this then sends it to the SCV. what else does the ECU need to know before it opens the SCV?
well, that was a bad idea!

right, i unplugged all of the connections on the fuel pump, wiggled about with the wires checking for breakages, couldn't find any. plugged them all back in eventually.

then got upset as i want it running, and she calls me in for eggs on toast, yeah great just what i need with diesel covered hands.

while upset, i got my big screw driver and a hammer and hit the body of the pump near the SCV. about 5 times on each side of it, just to hope it help and to tell it i hate it.

then thought 'i know ill crack the injector pipe off the pump and see if anything comes out now. then put the n/s battery back on.

put jump leads to her escort, turned the key to warm the plugs, then turned it so angrily i nearly broke it off, and the ###### thing fired up straight away.

what a bitch. so now i have no idea what the issue is, the scv is getting 8V while running, but i didnt do anything! so im leaving it running to see if she dies again.

not got my hopes up just yet.

but could a sensor connection have been poo, could it not have been on right, could have there been a small amount of air in the pump, could have the trusty hammer helped? ill never know i think.

ill let you know what happens in the next 15 mins. i really hope she works now but not hopeful.

time to sell now me thinks.... ;D

it may well have been a semi-stuck SCV the "gentle" tap may just have dislodged the bit of debris holding the SCV from opening properly.. Well this is my take on what you have said

may well be the tap(ish) i hope so. ill take the lid off the pump soon and see if i can see anything inside.

rads, i didnt even have my egg on toast, went cold and horrible!!!!

the mission isn't over yet, im worried about the test drive, cant be pushing the thing again, did my back no good atall. ill be driving it soon, but don't have any trust in the old girl yet.

it really annoys me that i dont know what the cause is!

i'll post a bit later and let you all know how it went.

to all those that helped out, i am very thankful. i'll even pay a subscription at the end of the month now

well went for a drive last night and this morning to get fuel, and it drove ok, was pulling nice, was mostly cruising trying not to boost, until i was nearly home on a 60mph road so gave it stick there as its not to far to push .

but all was ok, i dont want to play around with it at the min but there is a horrid rattle/knocking from the engine, think an injector or pipe may be blocked.

going to keep driving as it is for the next few days and see if the rattle stays or goes. if it continues but the surf keeps running then ill look into it.

ill have to check if all 4 injectors are receiving fuel and if yes ill go down the recondition injector route. probably only buy 1 and change 1 at a time until its fixed it. no point in getting 4!!! too expensive.

                      at them moment
well, that was a bad idea!

                        found sorted

just an update on this issue, to save anyone reading all through it, i had a no starting issue with my surf, had no fuel leaving the fuel pump, and ended up hitting the scv after taking all the batteries out to find an issue with wiring.

well it started after hitting the valve and replacing the batteries, and was fine until last night off road expedition, where down a rough road that causes massive vibration she dies. in the middle of a byway at 9.30pm. GREAT!

luckily this time when the ignition was on there was a relay under the dash that was buzzing horrendously. so had something to look for causing this.

popped the bonnet and played around with the immobiliser wires. and found out that part of the immobiliser is a fuel cut-off.

so after tracing the entire alarm system found that a wire goes from the diagnostic plug, through the fuse then had a bodge ass connector hidden away that goes to the fuel relay, and the whole entire issue was this bodge connector not being wired correctly.

where i took the batteries out then put them back i had wedged it to a position where it made a connection!!!

                        alarms are gash!

so rewired all that today and its beautiful! happy times. didnt leave the byway till 10.30 and was pitch black, no phone signal a mile away from any civilisation working under torch light of my dying phone. horror movie scene!

Had a sort of similar experience recently.

Bearing in mind I've only had my Surf for about a month and I've never had a diesel before, when I couldn't start after filling up with diesel (yes, it was diesel!) I nearly cried thinking I had bought a dud.

After half an hour of checking fuses, connections, priming the fuel thingy I gave up and phoned a recently aquired mechanic friend who arrived 20 minutes later with two other mechanic buddies of his.

Looked like a mini F1 pitstop with these three guys checking all over the engine bay doing various mystical "mechanic type stuff". In the end one turned the ignition key to crank the engine while another sprayed WD40 into the where the air filter normally lives. A massive splutter and high revs and the truck worked finally started and ran fine. So far has run just as well as before.

Might be slightly unrelated but a nice trick I personally had never heard of.
