Well, I gave it my best shot but it just aint for me. I sold a Defender TDI three and a half years ago and bought a 94 3.0TD Surf, auto in black. After 41 years of LR ownership I just can't get on with it, it's soulless and bland. It's immensely powerful and very comfortable, it all still works (which it wouldn't on a Land Rover) but it's just not for me.

Well, fair play to you, Rod, for your honesty. At least you're making your decision based on first hand experience of owning both vehicles. I'll be willing to bet that a lot of people on here will be ready to make a negative comment based on pure predjudice, alone, never having owned a Landy, ( Myself included, even though I have had lots of experience of failed Landy transmission components. ). It would be a boring world if we all liked exactly the same things. Good luck with your new choice of vehicle.

There is a lot of prejudice, and not a small amount from folk who really have no idea. I'm in no doubt that Toyota build quality is superb, if only LR could match it.
It's a great pity Toyota didn't buy LR instead of all the others that have had a go. There's no denying that LR have the edge in offoad capability, for pure traction there's nothing to match LR products for some unknown reason. If only Toyota could collaborate (buy) LR engineering / design (4x4, not quality) they would without any doubt make the best vehicle for all purposes.

This isn't to say Toyota are no good offroad, they serve their purpose very well, it's just that LR go further. And before anyone jumps on me, this HAS been proven time and time again in back to back tests. Where the Toyota scores is that it does what it does without breaking.
Before anyone accuses me of not knowing what the heck I'm on about, the cups in my living room for modified 4x4 trials obviously show otherwise, I may be too old for it now but I was well into offroading.

I just sold mine and bought a Y61 patrol.

Had the hilux 3 years and it was a great truck, just fancied a change. The Patrol is a nice thing as well.

Now you are taking the proverbial p...! Ask my son who works in Africa on a game ranch which vehicle he prefers and without a doubt it is a Toyota Landcruiser for reliability and traction. When you are out in the bush, you do not want to get stuck and walk miles through a hostile environment to get help.
They have 3 or 4 LRs which have low mileage on them gathering dust in the compound as no one wants to use them. These are based on the LWB Defender chassis. Even the farmers don't want to buy LRs due to being so unreliable.
During recent floods one of the Landcruisers was on its side and submerged for 5 days. They dragged it out, took it to the workshop, gave it a wipe down and it started first time! These LCs are based on the 70 series.
All my friends in Africa have ditched the LR in favour of other 4 x 4s. In days gone by like the sixties and seventies LR was king in Africa, but LR never kept up with technology and other companies did build 4 x 4s that were more reliable.
