Hi Richard, on the offchance you might see this (or if anyone knows his email address) i just wanted to ask a question, you kindly posted a diagram in this thread below
if you remember? well the steps more or less finished and working ok, the only thing left to do is sort out some sort of cut out to stop the winch over riding the step, i cant use the diag as i've dumped the 2000lb winch for a biggun (full size 13,000lb) so the size of the main cables prevents me from wiring it to a DPDT, this winch has a remote hand held controll and a pair of radio remote's, i did want to wire a cutout on the main earth lead but cant see any way of doing this due to the thickness of cable so working on the handheld, is there any way i could wire a cutout just useing the handheld cable and switch, i added a couple of pics of it, it has what looks like a DPDT momentry rocker which has three wires running to the solinoid box (had to rewire the cr@p original plug to a snap connector),
i'm guessing i still need to make a switch to cross over the polarity?
any help/ideas much apprecieated, cheer's ian

Hi Ian,hows you.yep i remember your project. From what your saying your hand held remote is basically doing the job that a dpdt switch would do in a locker install(not sure if the hand held remote has two separate earths tho) that just leaves the need like you say for a cut out to shut the motor off at its top and bottom limits. To the best of my knowledge making and breaking the earth on the toyota e locker was achieved in a purely mechanical way.i,ve never taken one apart to see how this is achieved but i would guess that maybe there were two sets of contact strips that slid across each other as the locker engaged and disengaged. So if we relate this to your step going up and down you would have a supply to bring the step up with its earth being provided by a contact on the moving part of the step sliding against a contact on the stationary part of the step until it reached the desired position whereby the contact would be broken. At this same moment the two other contacts to provide an earth for the reverse polarity circuit to bring the step back down again would line up which would again allow you to bring the step back down to a desired point until contact is broken.
i,m not sure if it makes sense how i,ve explained it but the theory is sound.i dont have a pm facility on this forum Ian but you can e mail me at rikm777@hotmail.com.i,l try to put together a diagram that might explain it better .

Hi Richard, i'm fine mate thanks and a dam sight finer now i have this bl00dy step more or less finished, been at it since christmas
i understand what your saying basicly and a rough diag would be great if you wouldn't mind, if i have any questions i'll email you, my email btw is
ian,price90@ntlworld.com (in case you need it)
i have been useing one of the radio remote's to opperate the step and just best guessing when to let go of the button as this big winch has a little "run on" after you let go of the button or switch, so i have to guess where the step will end up after the run on i opperate it for my wife, i dare not let her do it or i can see the winch tearing the entire assembly off the chassis and her with it so some sort of "fail safe" would be nice
meanwhile i intend to have a look again inside the solinoid and see there these three wires hook up to from the hand held switch, i'll try and get some better pics of inside there in case its of any help,
thanks again Richard for replying so quickly, cheers ian
this is the winch i got if its any help

Hi Richard, email sent with attachments but just in case this is a drawing of the winch solinoid box, the handheld appears to be switching a live feed and i think its a DTDP switch ?, like i said if it gonna be a right pain for you please dont bother with it but any help/advice for a cut out would be great,
