  • Can I fit my 2.4 head onto a 2.8 shortblock??

Hey guys just a quick question,
I have found a local cheap rebuilt 2.8 (3L) short block and am hoping to be able to fit it to my surf to give her a new lease on life (2.4's blowby and oil consumption is getting really high)

I know someone in the past here has said that a 2.8 head will fit on a 2.4 to replace a cracked head, but can we go the other way around?
Whats the clearance volume like on the 2.4 vs 2.8 heads, will it completely throw out the compression ratio?

Cheers for any help guys, just thinking if it works it means its going to be a 2.8 with a turbo (and an excuse to finally get around to fitting the intercooler sitting in my garage waiting to be put on)

It will fit but the 3L is a better head so why risk it.

If yours is the EFI model then you will either have to convert to the mechanical pump, or find a way to mount a crank sensor.

      cheers for the speedy answer,
Sorry didnt mention that I have the 2lt non efi, hence looking at the 3l short block

Im just being cheap as the rebuilt blocks selling for $1000 nz and the 3L heads normally sell for $1500 nz alone!

Mostly not going to bother as my head has already been upgraded to a better none cracking type (cross fingers ) so dont really want to spend $1500 on a new head just to throw mine away, or sell.

Only concern now is if the clearance volume will be similar to the 2L head Im using now?
If the 3L heads a little bigger to allow for the bigger displacement will it mean mine is to small and raise my compression to crazy levels and blow itself to bits?

Been googling but I cant find the specifications on the heads anywhere

'91 models should be a 2L-TE. What's the Model and Frame numbers for your vehicle?

It should be ok as long as you use the correct gasket. Use a 3L gasket and new head bolts.

You will need to measure piston protrusion above the block and average out the measurement. Then use -

        Piston protrusion above block -

        0.68 - 0.77 Gasket B
        0.77 - 0.87 Gasket D
        0.88 - 0.97 Gasket F

        Gasket thickness

        1.40 - 1.50mm (B)
        1.50 - 1.60mm (D)
        1.60 - 1.70mm (F)

You will also have to put an oil return line in the sump for the turbo.

you legend that the kind of info I need about the gaskets. thanks heaps

She is definatly a 2lt non efi, motors actually out of a 1990, pic attached of the donors plate.
The short block is coming bare so no sump so I will already have my sump lines ready to go when I swap mine over

Looking rather promising now, think I might just have to but the motor upgrade now, cheers

Crud, forgot about the harmonic balancer (belt pulley thing) and flywheel and clutch.
Will these match up nicely as well?

Mabey I just buy a complete 2.8, be 4 times the price but 4 times less shagging about

Same harmonic balancer as you have now. Just make sure it's a good one. What clutch do you have now? Convert to solid if dual mass and go for the 240mm version over the 225mm.

Already converted it to a solid flywheel (my old one shattered it springs)

Thats the motor im buying, seems a little odd having 3 new pistons and one original piston used but for the price and including gaskets and seals I cant complain, what do you all think? good candidate for my surf?

Block is cheap enough if they did it right. Any warranty/

                  Which clutch, 225mm or 240mm?

buggered if I can remember what clutch I used now sorry, genuine toyota from the dealer anyway, but think ill probbly chuck a heaver duty one in anyway, seems silly to have the whole thing out and not do that as well. Mind you theres only 20,000k on that clutch.... will have to see what state its in when shes out as the rear main seals gone so its a little slippy from oil contamination so it could have had it.

Dam im looking foward to having some more power now, and a lot less smoke pouring out the back too (weak turbo seals so rebuilding that while its out too)

Old surfs getting a whole new lease on life!!

Will make sure I take lots of photos of the rebuild and post up here for anyone whos interested in my 2.4-2.8 mash up engine build

Actually this could be rather funny, this is going to mean that in my surfs grand total of 195,000km life span so far its had:

                      Heads on V6 3VZ-E replaced
                      Entire V6 replaced
V6 blew bottom end and swapped out for 2L-T diesel and auto to manual conversion
                      Now shes getting a 2.8 3L-T swap!!

Dam my surfs been swapped about a bit
